Salad Dressing Furniture Polish?

Grandma is allergic to way too many things these days and can't set foot in the cleaning products aisle without an asthma attack from all the artificial perfumes, so more natural (and often much less costly) methods of getting things clean always make her happy. Green Cleaning 101 (DIY Natural Cleaning Solutions with Vinegar and Other Frugal Resources That You Already Have) is full of some great ideas - and some not so great ones.

Author "Sustainable Stevie" has divided this very short book up into sections based on particular household products. Many of his ideas are great, but Grandma takes exception to a couple of them in particular.

First, Stevie recommends making a paste out of salt and water, then using that to clean your sterling silver and copper. If you've ever tried to make a paste with table salt, you'll recall that it never gets very pasty. Lots of those salt crystals remain and they will scratch the dickens out of your valuable silver and copper.

Stevie also recommends a solution of lemon juice and olive oil in a spray bottle as a furniture polish. Grandma certainly does agree that lemon oil has been used for hundreds of years as a furniture polish. One does not, however, make lemon oil by mixing lemon juice (an acid that will bleach your furniture and perhaps dissolve the finish) with olive oil. That mixture is more commonly known around the house as "salad dressing." The lemon oil of furniture polish fame is a natural essential oil that is found in the skin of the lemon. (There is a corresponding orange oil.) An easy way to see this oil for yourself is to take a sugar cube and rub it vigorously over the skin of a lemon. The sugar will absorb the oil from the skin, even changing color in the process. Drop it into your tea when you're done. Extraction of the oil from lemon skins is a more complicated process than most will want to indulge in. Old English makes lemon oil furniture polish.

One other point. Scientific studies (see Nature and others for abstracts) have proven that while exposure of hydrogen peroxide to light may break down the compound, that is a process that takes many months - even stored on a sunny windowsill in a clear glass bottle. There is absolutely no need to purchase special dark spray containers to protect your hydrogen peroxide. The stuff historically comes in a dark container in order to allow the customer to easily distinguish it from the almost identically packaged rubbing alcohol - also a clear liquid. Those who were illiterate could tell one from the other by the color of the bottle. Stevie does NOT mention the more important factor in the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide - exposure to air. Chemically, hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. When it is exposed to air it readily breaks down into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) - the process that makes it a good oxidizer. (Think bleach - your clothes, your hair, the stains on the rug.) It is important to always keep whatever container you have it stored in tightly capped.

Essential reading. Much more than just a “dating book.”

I greatly enjoy owning and reading this book. It is written in a conversational, easily-accessible style that presents the author’s numerous insights in a logical and highly-effective manner. The book is a fluent initial read which can easily be referred to later for specific topics.

Richards rightly places the emphasis up front on understanding Japanese culture and language before addressing the specifics of dating. His chapters on just Japanese culture alone are worth the investment in this book.

Progressing on to meeting and dating Japanese women, Richards clarifies that this book is not intended for “one night stands” but instead for more meaningful, enduring relationships. He addresses all relationship aspects, from meeting to maintaining, social to emotional to physical. All of these are supported by numerous anecdotes, humorous and sad, but all directly relevant.

While reading this book I recalled two of my own relationships with Japanese women that started promisingly before falling apart. I immediately understood what I had done (or failed to do) that innocently but effectively ended them. If only I had had this book back then . . .

Definitely recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. There are a lot of tips here for relationships with Japanese women. Sadly, I cannot vouch for the veracity of the material since I don't know any Japanese women yet. However, I do hope to meet some and this book will help me bridge the gap between my western culture and her Japanese culture.

The book is written in a more personal style with plenty of anecdotes from the author's own experiences, which makes this book easier to read. It's not a dry Do This First, Then do that next type of book.

Even if I wind up in a friendly relationship with a Japanese woman, I think this will give me an understanding on how she thinks. And, according to the book, a Japanese woman thinks VERY differently from a western woman, though the book does point out some similarities.

I also appreciate that the book isn't written for men with one night stands on their minds. It really is meant to help you understand a woman in the context of a real relationship.

I also enjoyed the examples of what not to do and the experiences the author found during his research.

I find it fascinating that Japanese women think so differently so I read this book again from time to time. I do recommend it highly.

New confidence in dating Japanese women

Understanding Japanese Women is an excellent book, written in an easy to understand way, with a lot of humour and anecdotes to keep the reading interesting. It really stresses important cultural differences between Japanese and Western society, with this I feel a lot more comfortable and will hopefully avoid to be misunderstood or even upset Japanese women.

This is probably the only book of it's kind, other books I have read about social interaction with Japanese omit how to interact in a romantic way.

Several of my previous attempts to date Japanese have failed, and with the new found knowledge from this book I can clearly see why. With new found confidence and knowledge in what signals to look for and how to react I think it will work out just fine now!

I love the pace

I read this book when it first came out several years ago. It was my first Dan Brown title, and I have since read many others, including all of tge books in this series. I love the pace, suspense, and intricate weaving of details from both art and history into the book. The story keeps you guessing until the very end and does not disappoint when it finally does close. It is so well done that even when finished it left me with questions and a desire to further read about the historical & Biblical references from the book. If you have ever studied art history or the history of the church and love suspense novels, this book may be for you. Fun, full of suspense, and hard to put down. It kept me happy 12 years ago while on bed rest during a hot July while pregnant (not an easy task!) and I enjoyed it again when I listened to it on Audible it last year. One of my favorite modern fiction titles!

I've read this book & seen the movie several times, & still find the story absolutely compelling. I plan to visit the areas mentioned, & revel in seeing the ancient buildings referenced. I have read much of the books & information about Mary Magdelene & hope that one day all that information can be actually verified. Dan Brown's writing is superb, he has become my favorite author of all time, & I am an avid reader.

Great suspenseful thriller

A suspenseful thriller that will keep you hooked until the end. Obviously this book is pretty old and I had just gotten around to reading it so some of the surprises were ruined for me but even knowing most of what was going to happen it was a very enjoyable read. Once I got about a third of the way through I was hooked and couldn't put it down.

A wonderful little collection

If you like sci-fi, some romance, and a little bit of action adventure then this book is for you. Anyone who is a fan of Space Opera or Firefly will enjoy this. You won't be disappointed. Oh and if anyone wishes to understand more of the WildSpace univers, then I highly recommend going to DeviantArt and checkin out the WildSpace gallery. Tons of awesome details to see.

This is a great textbook. However you must be careful when buying it because it does not have the access code for McGraw-Hill's Connect. If you were to buy the access code separately from McGraw-Hill it will cost you around $70.

Watch out for the wrong edition

If you're a student taking an accounting class that requires the 4th edition, beware of ISBN 978-0071101196. It's an international edition of this book and dastardly enough contains slight variations to the examples and exercises to the point that you'll be completely confused.

Now I'm stuck paying full price at the student bookstore because I can't wait for another shipment :(
