Quite Interesting!

I just finished reading "Healing Lost Souls", and I must say that I'm not really sure how I feel about this subject. The ideas it contains are quite new to me, and I will need to take some time to digest them...

In this book, the author discusses his findings (as well as the findings of other professionals) that people on earth can be impacted by the attachment of earthbound souls, "dark force entities" &/or extraterrestrials (ET's). The idea being that when there is a weakness in our auras, it's easy for these non-physical entities to enter into our physical being, and impact our lives in quite significant ways.

The author also describes his way of helping these entities move on - a therapy called SRT - where the experience is treated as real (no matter how off the wall it sounds), and the entity is spoken to in a calm, nice but firm way, where it's explained that they are disturbing this persons life & need to move into the light.

Other topics such as past life regression therapy & the history of exorcisms is also included.

Examples are included throughout where the conversations between therapist & non-physical entity are noted, and the change in that persons life after such sessions are completed is discussed.

I would highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the paranormal, as well as to therapists who are unsure how to proceed with certain patients - as 1 or more of the therapies discussed here may be of help. One word of caution though, and open mind is a must!

NO JOKE!

For those that do not believe or think that this is impossible, think again. Any book by Dr.Baldwin is a MUST READ if you are interested in, or are going to attempt Spirit Releasement. After learning all I can about this subject and participating in, and cunducting therapy sessions, I can say that it's TRUE. After my clients failed to accept my suggestion therapy, I took to sprit releasement and you will not believe the amazing things that have taken place. Is it real? All I can tell you is that spirit releasement WORKS! Yes, this work is years ahead of it's time, but when is it the right time? That time is now as we seem to be moving on a tide of planetary changes in human consciousness. GET IT, READ IT.

Must read for understanding lost/important knowledge

This is a great, comprehensive, fascinating book and a must read for "regular" people and for therapists and healers of all sorts. There is a whole part of our world that no one talks about anymore when it comes to spirt attachment - at least in positive, healing terms (I mean other than angels, guides, etc.). Yes, we talk about the scarier aspects of spirits - ghosts, demons, possession, dark stuff (the movies have conditioned us about these subjects). But we need to know the information in this book (told in a very readable style) because these things operate in our world and affect us much more than we ever imagined.

Most of us are not aware of these potentially powerful, negative influences on our lives and therefore cannot help themselves or others with problems due to this lack of knowledge. They may fear spirits and dark-force entities, but that isn't constructive. This book is full of practical, basic knowledge necessary for living healthy lives by freeing us of these unwanted influences. We've gotten away from consciously dealing with non-physical entities in our post-industrial, technically oriented culture. Just because we don't believe in these things, doesn't mean they don't exist.

This book has plenty of cases that prove the existence of "spirit attachment" and un-welcomed entity interference and gives us guidance on how to free ourselves and our loved ones. There are many fascinating stories here. It will change your world view, that's for sure! Hope you have an open mind - it will pay off if you read this book.

A friend and I have used this author's techniques and accomplished freeing me of some very unwanted influences. I know it sounds crazy and weird - but it works! (I also used Edith Fiore's techniques and have read all of Dr. Modi's books on the subject as well. Also highly recommended. But this is a great book if you are only going to read one.)

Excellent ABA Manual - Written with both parents and ABA professionals in mind

We were referred to this book when we'd asked an experienced ABA therapist if there was a "how to" manual out there that listed what had been taught to the children in the original UCLA Young Autism Project. While this book doesn't list granular specifics of the UCLA study, nor is it affiliated with it (one of the authors played a significant role in the study however, John McEachin), it does list out which ABA programs should be taught to a child on the Spectrum and more importantly, it lists the sequence in which those programs should be taught. Many of the programs detailed lead into, or are pre-requisites for, programs that are taught later on in the book. The book is really useful and well worth the money for multiple reasons. It can be referenced and easily comprehended by parents, who want to implement some of the ABA programs themselves, and also, it can be leveraged by parents so that they can ask informed questions of their professional ABA provider. In addition to providing an ABA curriculum, the book also discusses disruptive behaviors, self-stimulatory behaviors, sleep problems and toilet training; all of which are explained in chapters that are well written and easy to comprehend. There's a reason that this book is one of the biggest sellers in the Autism community.

Life Changing!

This book is life changing!!! As a parent of a 4-year-old daughter with Autism - I have read this book and all of the books by these authors - they are invaluable - they give you the tools you need to teach your child, understand the process, and communicate with your childs' therapists. ABA is the only research proven method out there and it is a shame that more people aren't aware of the resources they should be using. School districts often provide minimal eclectic programs that are ineffective. Regional centers notoriously lie about services your child needs or qualifies to recieve - these are the first people I've worked with - attended their workshops- and learned their ABA - that get it right - if only everyone had the opportunity to learn from them - more kids would make better progress. This is powerful teaching and learning - I've worked at Harvard Business Schools' Executive Education Programs and I've seen a variety of teaching in my life thus far - this stuff works!

Right after I got the autism diagnosis for my son I realized that behavioral therapy would be our main focus of treatment and due to financial constraints, I would be the primary therapist.

After reading some really heady and intellectual literature on behavioral therapy I just wanted to scream, "Yes, I know, but tell me what to do!!"

A Work in Progress does just that. It is simply written and easy to use. Look up the behavior you wish to address in the table of contents, turn to the indicated page, and there, clearly written is a step-by-step plan. Brilliant. Just what we needed.

Disappointing Edition!

I was really disapointed. The 2008 edition had both the lactation risk & the pregnancy risk. This editon has only the lactation risk. Doc Hale added abunch of other seemingly pointless stuff i'll never use. Now I have to look in two places for the info I need.

Greatest resource for expectant and breastfeeding mothers

Scientific, up to date comprehensive information about medications (prescription and over the counter) and whether they're dangerous when you're breastfeeding. The book lists safe alternatives for what you're currently taking or might need to take in the future, so you can avoid unsafe medications. I found one section really interesting—it lists the medications that pass through breast milk safely but taste bad to your baby. I never would have considered that babies could have difficulty breastfeeding due to the taste! This is a great book to get if you want to go all-out and understand what you're doing.

About the Author

Rae Pica has been an education consultant (www.raepica.com) specializing in the education of the whole child, children’s physical activity, and developmentally appropriate practice since 1980. A former adjunct instructor with the University of New Hampshire, she is the author of 19 books, including the text Experiences in Movement and Music, in its 5th edition; the award-winning Great Games for Young Children and Jump into Literacy; and the parenting book, A Running Start: How Play, Physical Activity and Free Time Create a Successful Child. One of the BEST and most succinct resources for teachers who are on the front lines rallying against the harmful practices happening in education today!! An advocate's handbook of thoroughly researched short essays in layman's language, with more resources and actions to take at the end of each piece. I wish this book could be in the hands of every teacher, administrator, parent, and, especially, every legislator who is involved in policy making for education. This is a very powerful work that can help those struggling to do what's right for young children articulate their beliefs and back them with sound research and, ultimately, change their practice for the better.

This was an excellent book for all teachers and administrators! I loved how at the end of each chapter, the author gives you real world things to do, to support appropriate early childhood practices in the classroom. Every person who was a part of writing the common core standards needs to read this book, and then revise the standards to better meet the needs of all of our students!

Very accessible, relevant peds book

I have enjoyed using this book so far. I'm a physician assistant who graduated 5 months ago and one of the nurse practitioners I work with in our family practice community health center recommended this book. It's very helpful to review for well child exams as well as common pediatric issues. I like spiral binding and easy access anticipatory guidance in the back. Helpful to refresh on peds issues or as a quick reference in family practice.

Very pleased with this purchase. This collection of novels by Colleen McCullough contains three stories Tim, An Indecent Obsession, and The Ladies of Missalonghi. Tim is a well told story of love in an unusual situation. The Ladies of Missalonghi relates the story of Missy Wright a spinster who sets out to change her life. I am giving this book a five star rating even though I have not read An Indecent Obsession, yet. However, I am looking forward to reading it.

Without a doubt, Colleen McCullough is a marvelous writer who knows her craft. The author often delves deep into her characters, revealing both strength and weaknesses of human nature. I enjoyed all three stories contained in the volume, especially "Tim," which is also an excellent film.

Wind Cowlesm, PhD, received her doctorate in Cognitive Science and Linguistics in 2003 at one of the premier centers of psycholinguistic research, the University of California, San Diego, and was a research fellow at the University of Sussex with Professor Alan Garnham. Her training and experience in psychology, linguistics, cognitive science and neuroscience makes her part of a new wave of researchers approaching psycholinguistic research from multiple perspectives and methods. Her main research focus is on the roles that discourse and information structures play in the written comprehension and spoken production of sentences. Her research applies multiple research techniques, including eye-tracking and event-related brain potentials, to questions about the ways in which people make reference and build structure in language.

A fluid, informative, and quick summary of current issues for the right audience

Dr. Cowles has done an admirable job composing a coherent introduction to some current issues in the interdisciplinary field of psycholinguistics, but it may not be for everyone. She introduces the field, and does provide a bit of linguistics basics. From there on it becomes clear that the book is most appropriate for those somewhat familiar with cognitive psychology, or at least experimental psychology.

Having taken both linguistics and cognitive psych, I had little trouble moving through the language examples and experimental paradigms. Being a linguist herself also trained as a cognitive scientist and experimental psychologist, Dr. Cowles clearly has deep, expert knowledge, which the reader may sometimes feel she is trying very hard to hold back. She largely succeeds, making the book an excellent primer for someone looking to further explore psycholinguistic theory and experimentation, but nothing is covered with great technical depth. Also, some of the experimental explanations do get a bit confusing, and toward the end she slips up a bit and brings in some terminology she hasn't fully explained. If I had a less adequate background, I might have noticed more of this.

That being said, the book is a fairly quick read even if you need to spend a bit of extra time comprehending a few chapters, and each chapter is split into small sections to hold your attention. I finished nearly all of it in a day, and I am now looking into some of the references. Dr. Cowles mentions several somewhat older papers that are important for each general topic, but only in some areas does she cite more than a few cutting-edge studies -- overall, I think there is a good balance to get you started, given the abbreviated coverage of each point.

I am not enough of an expert to comment confidently on how comprehensive the book is, but I respect the author's choices. Particularly illuminating, to me, was the chapter on methods, explaining with commendable clarity and little jargon the main issues and technology relevant to psycholinguistic research. Also, some insight into neurolinguistics is most welcome given current research trends.

I do have a warning, that the editing is not yet polished. It is possible that the author is not a native speaker of English herself, as there are many times that articles (a, an, the) are missing or used incorrectly. I was hardly slowed down in most cases, but occasionally the reader may have to pause and consider whether a word isn't quite right, or is missing altogether. This is, obviously, of particular concern when complex experiments are being described, and nearly all of the errors would be easy to fix. So, if you are impatient with that sort of thing, beware, but in general it didn't impair my ability to extract knowledge from the text.

In the first chapter, psycholinguistics is introduced, with mention of top-down vs. bottom-up and serial vs. parallel processing issues. In the second, linguistics is presented in an informal manner with few graphical aids, running through phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics as normal with a more to-the-point style, avoiding controversies and presenting about as much info as some cognitive psychologists might care to know without a particular passion for language. In the third chapter, offline vs. online measuring techniques are touched upon, with explanations and examples of questionnaire research (e.g. Likert scales), button-press paradigms (e.g. lexical decision tasks, self-paced reading), and vocal response recording and analysis. For unconscious response research, very accessible summaries on the relevant uses and capabilities of eye-tracking, event-related brain potentials (ERPs), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are provided. The chapter also covers a few issues with cognitive-style experimental designs themselves, with comments on confoundings, sample sizes, and other threats to internal and external validity.

In the fourth chapter, the ambiguity of words and sentences is considered, with modular and interactionist interpretation approaches presented and evidence weighed for garden path and constraint-based processing theories. In the fifth chapter, the brain's role in language production and comprehension is more formally introduced, with typical coverage of Broca's and Wernicke's areas, aphasias (including an interesting peek into Semantic Dementia research), and some commentary on the relevance of working memory models. The remainder of the chapter focuses on how the neural cognition of bilingual speakers differs from monolinguals, such as which areas of the brain show activity for less robustly acquired languages, and also on some general differences in non-linguistic cognitive ability. The sixth chapter explores the issue of dialogue, particularly focusing on experiments analyzing listener-speaker relations using a real participant and a research staff member. Coreference, through pronouns or semantically richer expressions, is analyzed from sentence structure and mental-model angles. Personally, I would have liked the author to mention deixis or anaphora, but she avoids the terms, which may be a disservice to a reader who attempts to read some of the cited papers.

In the seventh chapter, the hot topic of sign language is touched upon. Incredibly, the author feels the needs to point out that many still remain ignorant of the fact that sign is anything more than pantomime. She uses examples from many different sign languages, exploring the intricate and highly interesting contrasts between vocal and gestural modalities, but without any strong conclusions -- a bit of a tease. Lastly, in chapter eight, a newer issue is discussed which could affect the interpretation of a large volume of past research. Essentially, evidence is presented that humans do not always fully process all sentence information, instead attending to whatever amount seems to be necessary. This is in line with other attention-related compromises people make unconsciously when allocating mental resources. The chapter is short but example-heavy, and could be cleaned up a bit. At the end, the author very briefly summarizes the basic considerations of language covered and the general concerns of the field.

In sum, I applaud Dr. Cowles for managing to present several complex issues in a fairly accessible and engaging manner -- it could not have been easy to balance this text for merely curious people of limited backgrounds as well as for those interested in contributing to the field more directly, such as myself. Most importantly, I gained some basic confidence in my conceptual knowledge of psycholinguistics along with ideas about the more current avenues of research, which I will take to primary sources and more in-depth texts.

The book gives a pretty clear introduction to the subject, brief and to the point. Suitable for absolute beginners. The large number of references also gives a clear indication on how to continue studying psycholinguistics, i.e. from which sources.
