About the Author

James F. Twyman is the best-selling author of ten books, including The Moses Code, Emissary of Light, and The Art of Spiritual Peacemaking. Interesting ... But Lightweight

I have a few problems with this book and the author.

The author has written several books... all on different ideas. He writes a book and then does a workshop tour. So far, he's written The Moses Code, The Kabbalah Code ..so we think maybe he's got a Jewish mysticism idea going on... but THEN he gets on this Saint Francis kick and now, with THE PROOF, he's left judeo-Christianity behind and he's going with generic New Age mysticism. It irks me that authors like Dyer and Vitale and Twyman just seem to pump out books for the purpose of selling books. (Joe Vitale actually wrote a book about how to write best-selling Self-Help books by using hypnotic Power Words!)

He wrote this book with a co-author (Anakha Coman)... if 'writing' is what you could call it. This book is a transcript of conversations they had about ideas of Oneness (a concept they leave sketchily-defined). The book is chockful of sentences like "...The way I'm experiencing [Oneness] in this moment is as a longing of the heart, a longing to remember..."

Each of these metaphor-strewn sections are just a few pages in length. There are 40 Practices (190 pages), the three lessons about "Achieving the Impossible" (30 pages) an Afterward and 14 blank pages labeled "Notes". Each section begins with a few quotes from famous authors and ends with an exercise. These 'exercises' consist, mainly, of a mindset of point of view for the day. ("...Today, practice finding a pace that connects with your natural rhythm and flow...") This material is straight New Age/Guided Meditation tape prose. While it is well-done, it is not innovative.

Finally, the author's premise is hollow. He lets us in on the gambit, unconsciously I think, when he shares that he discovered The Proof, first, by reading a book by a Mentalist (not the psychic kind.... the stage magician kind). He learns a technique that looks like mind-reading but is actually being aware the subtle clues you can pick up by close observation of a person. As he improved his ability to read those unconscious movements and expressions, he began to believe that he truly was reading their minds and that, at some deep level, we must all be One. This 'muscle-reading' technique is taught to the reader so that we can also experience the same revelation. (This is akin to Tony Robbin's Fire-Walk workshops where you learn the trick to walking across a pit of hot coals... thereby discovering that you are a powerful being who can achieve anything you desire.)

If you are a Tony Robbins or a Wayne Dyer fan... if Inspirational literature is something that turns you on... if you like flowery, conversational chapters about Rhythm and Breath and Sound and Heart... you will probably enjoy this book. If you were expecting a book with 'meat'... with clear instructions about real practices that would bring you to the undeniable truth of about the Interdependent Web of Life... you will probably be disappointed.

A nurturing process for birthing your own transformation

The Proof is a nurturing, real, deep and smooth read. It speaks directly to real life and tenderly guides the reader to see that the longing for authentic connection to life, ourselves and each other is possible and is the only elixer that satisfies. It is entirely non-denominational and non-judgementatl--honoring all people and perspectives while at the same time helping us see what we have in common. In a day when so many books lay out how to get what we want on a surface level, this book builds a bridge between our personal and planetary healing. It feels written by someone who has really walked the path --no frills, no promises--just real, honest and loving guidance. I will refer to it and read it over and over.

Gratitude...

Having spent most of my life feeling seperation, from myself, others and God. As I've started reading and doing the suggested daily practices in the book "The Proof" I'm starting to feel more calm, less anxious, more present in my life and a greater connection with all things and with God!

My vision of God is now found in giving up any belief in the idea of God. And by doing that you discover the infinite and the absolute, and you realize that we are all one in each others eyes...and in God's.

Helps us enjoy the Bible the way she does

I've read a lot of books about Bible study written by experts--people who love to teach the Bible. But this book is clearly about someone who first loves the Bible, and then helps us love it more by what she teaches. I'm almost shocked at the blessings I received in every chapter. Chapter 11 on the application of God's Word to our lives has meant the most. Each chapter is accessible, real and practical. I don't think The Bible Study Handbook is as much about how to study the Bible as it is how to enjoy God's Word so that we are changed.

Great Resource: very readable, understandable, and practical

The Bible Study Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to an Essential Practice

I teach classes on how to study the Bible, so I'm always interested in reviewing tools and helps that might facilitate my teaching and communicate methods for effectively understanding the holy Scriptures. Consequently, it was with great excitement that I got my hands on Lindsay Olesberg's The Bible Study Handbook.

I took my first inductive Bible study class in 1988 and I have been collecting resources as well as taking additional how-to-study-the-Bible classes ever since. Needless to say, I have a nice collection of resources and methods at my disposal. It is with this awareness that I am confident to report that The Bible Study Handbook ranks among the highest rated of my resources for teaching the inductive methods of study. I will share my reasons.

Technical Specifics

The book weighs in just over two hundred fifty pages, not exhaustive, but it does stand up to its claim of being comprehensive. These pages are broken into three primary sections--Part 1: Foundations, Part 2: Building Blocks, and Part 3: Tool Box. In Foundations, Olesberg shares some of the influences and philosophy behind her passion and belief in the process of inductive Bible study. The next section of the book moves into the Building Blocks of inductive study method. Here, Olesberg introduces and teaches basic hermeneutical tools needed for accurate and effective interpretation of the Scriptures. Some of the major points in Building Blocks include contextual respect and understanding, which includes authorship (who wrote it, to whom was it written, why was it written) and narrative details (genre, cultural influences, socio-political, and economic circumstances to name a few). Moving to Part 3: Tool Box, is where Olesberg outlines helpful resources and practices necessary for effective Bible study.

The book is well annotated with a number of illustrations, tables, and graphs; all of these are very nice additions, especially for visual learners. Additionally, there is a collection of summary helps included in the appendices at the end of the book.

Things I really like

As I mentioned earlier in my review, I have been practicing and teaching inductive Bible study for many years. I can say with confidence that, for most people, Bible study is not easy and good Bible study is not quick. Inductive Bible study takes time, is detail oriented, requires good resources, and a very systematic approach. It is to these ends that I really appreciated the way that Lindsey Olesberg presented her methods and approach to Bible study. Her writing was reader friendly and her passion for Bible study was evident, which often becomes contagious for the reader. I also found an appreciation for the interactive exercises included at the end of each chapter. I think Olesberg made a practiced effort to include all of the primary learning styles in her handbook; at least as much as an author can accomplish this in a written form.

Final Thoughts

I don't have any serious criticism for The Bible Study Handbook. I wish the resources section in the appendices would have been a little more comprehensive, but some of that detail is covered in the Tool Box section of the book. Read this book and embrace the joy of Inductive Bible Study!

I was so excited to hear that Lindsey Olesberg had written a book on Inductive Bible Study especially since I knew that she was in charge of the Bible expositions at Urbana and the Lausanne congress. These have been two of the most important conferences in the last century related to world evangelization. Reading this book made me realize why they had chosen her for this task. Lindsey absolutely loves the Bible and has dedicated her life to help university students discover the riches of God's word. The book is full of practical wisdom on how to dig deeper into the Bible. I'm currently teaching the Bible several times a week to youth and young adults and I'm so thankful that Lindsey has gifted me with this absolute treasure.

If the Bible is God's word then we must labor at finding the best way to understand it. Many great scholars agree that Inductive Bible Study is probably the most effective, rewarding and enjoyable ways to study the Bible. Since Lindsey Olesberg is one of the leading inductive Bible Study trainers of our generation I highly recommend that you get this book.
