Rajan begins with the Portuguese poet Camões, whose poem celebrating Vasco da Gama’s passage to India becomes, according to its eighteenth-century English translator, the epic of those who would possess India. He closely examines Milton’s treatment of the Orient and Dryden’s Aureng-Zebe, the first English literary work on an Indian subject. Texts by Shelley, Southey, Mill, and Macaulay, among others, come under careful scrutiny, as does Hegel’s significant impact on English imperial discourse. Comparing the initial English representation of its actions in India (as a matter of commerce, not conquest) and its contemporaneous treatment of Ireland, Rajan exposes contradictions that shed new light on the English construction of a subaltern India.

Full disclosure: Heather Brooke is a hero of mine. I even bought her roses... twice.

That said, I read "The Revolution Will Be Digitised" and was enthralled with how Heather Brooke exposed more than just WikiLeaks and Julian Assange's immoral conduct, but also the information mining that's going on. From the Obama Campaign working with data brokers to the surveillance state growing around us in the name of "national security".

Heather Brooke also writes a lot about the information war or how, "Citizens around the world have long declared a desire to be trusted with the formation of their own opinions, and that can only come when they have access to the facts. This is the essence of the information war. Do we trust citizens to communicate freely and come to their own conclusions, or do we believe those in authority have a right to restrict and manipulate what we know?"

The subject matter of this book is certainly interesting. However, it has been let down by the author's choice of writing style. While it is not my preference, I don't mind the occasional non-fiction book written in story format. My problem with this book is that the format is inconsistent, switching between narrative and story and back again without warning. I was too annoyed to finish the book. Perhaps somebody else will like it better.

Love is my savior is an act of love

Love is My Savior is an act of love, a delicious cup of wine that should be sipped one poem at a time, slowly and meditatively, as Rumi meant it to be imbibed. The translations by Nesreen Akhtakhavari and the modern rendition by Anthony Lee, makes these poems intimately accessible to modern readers. The preface by Lee is a masterful scholarly piece, which examines and reveals Rumi and Shams’ nuanced relationships in all its wonderful manifestations. This collection of Rumi’s Arabic poems, which have been too long hidden from us, is truly a gift to Rumi-lovers and Sufi-lovers. Chogollah Maroufi
