About the Author
Dr. John Myers was raised in Lawrence, Kansas, a small "Jayhawker" town sitting in the shadow of Kansas University. After high school and three years in the army, "Dr. John's" undergraduate studies were quite diverse: basics at Bob Jones University; engineering at the University of Wisconsin; and three years of Bible study at Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. After that, Dr. Myers earned a doctorate in Chiropractic at Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa.

After graduation and an extensive background in several areas of natural, non–toxic healing, Dr. Myers focused his research in the field of medical electronics. He has developed the DHSWT program (Dual–Harmonic Sound Wave Therapy), a unique bio–electronic technology with significant potential. Utilizing the DHSWT program, Dr. Myers is presently concentrating on perfecting a new approach to adult stem cell therapy. Myers' new work is significant in that it is non–invasive, completely benign, and projects the potential of an inexpensive program readily available to all who need it

voices from eternity

John Myers has obtained recorded accounts of people on the verge of dying and written the accounts unedited. The stories are so realistic that you are brought to tears and wonder. The time covered goes almost to the time of Christ. I have read the book several times and have loaned to friends only to almost fight to get it back. I would not part with my copy for any money.

Hope of life after death

The book has been well documented and showed two different types of death--"hopeful" and "without hope". Various people gave their testimonies of both types of death. This has an important message for all of us today. There are still many skeptical of life after death. This book should help the reader to see the differences between hope and without hope. Read this book with an open mind and be willing to see the messages God wants you to understand and believe. May you receive hope (if you are searching for it) as you read Voices from the Edge of Eternity.

About the Author
Jonathan Langley was born in Lancaster in 1952. He studied graphic design and illustration at Liverpool College of Art and the Central School of Art and Design. He also studied bookbinding at Camberwell School of Art. In 1974 he became a freelance illustrator, working in publishing, editorial, advertising and design. Jonathan has illustrated numerous books for children. He lives in the English Lake District with his wife and three children.

The Interesting Narrative

The Interesting Narrative (1789) is one of the earliest "slave narratives", a genre that includes classics such as Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) and neo-slave narratives like Alex Haley's Roots (1976), Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) and Edward P. Jones' The Known World (2003). What makes Olaudah Equiano's account unique is that is was the first slave narrative to find a wide audience, and it is not hard to understand why - not only is it a good story, but it is very well written, almost literary - it sold so well it was a cornerstone in bringing about public sympathy and support for the abolition of the slavery in England.

Just about everything we know about Olaudah Equiano is from his autobiography. He was born around 1745 in Africa, kidnapped and enslaved at the age of 10 or 11 and shipped across the Middle Passage to the West Indies, and soon after to a Virginia plantation (he was too small to work the sugar cane fields). From there he had the good fortune to be purchased by the captain of a British warship, where he learned English manners, language and customs - and a promise of freedom. But, in one of the great blows of his life, he was tricked and sold back into slavery in the West Indies, where he worked on merchant ships for a number of years, finally able to save enough money (trading fruits and rum between ports of call) to buy his freedom in his early 20s. He then spent years as a freed man working on merchant and military ships traveling extensively around the Atlantic, including a trip to the Arctic. His close calls with death were many, including disease, shipwrecks and run-ins with whites who would beat him to within an inch of his life. Equiano eventually settled down in England, married a white girl, had two children and died a wealthy and respected gentleman, a remarkable achievement for a former African slave in the 18th century.

_The Interesting Narrative_ can be read on multiple levels. It is a fascinating first-hand document of 18th century British mercantilism, showing the Atlantic "Golden Triangle" in action. It is a story of Christian redemption - by following the teachings of the Bible, and those who transgress against it, Equiano explains why things turn out how they do. It is one of the great works of travel literature; exotic locales and death-defying adventures fill the pages. It is a powerful expose of 18th century slavery, unflinchingly detailing the institutionalized horrors and how both victim and victimizer are turned into animals. It is a call for action to end the slave trade.

In the end, we read books like this today with a certain amount of curious detachment, it has been about 150 years since slavery ended - or has it? Some 27 million slaves - more than twice the number of people taken from Africa during the entire 350 year history of the Africa slave trade - today toil in rich and poor countries around the world. Most Americans probably know more about slavery as it once existed, than as it is currently being practiced in their own time, directly touched by the cheap goods we purchase. Reading Equiano's account we can't help but be moved against slavery, all slavery, historical or contemporary, and for that the book has immortal value.

Beauty from Ashes

Of all the firsthand accounts known to us as "slave narratives," Vassa's description is unique in many ways. To begin with, he takes his readers all the way back to his African roots, shedding historically-confirmed light on almost lost ancient traditions. His discussion of the harrowing and epically sad capture and separation of he and his sister are among the most moving in this genre.

He then describes the despicable, inhumane conditions in the holds of the slave ships with a "you-are-there" writing style. Again, confirmed by other sources, these are some of the most often quoted accounts in historical texts. In this same chronological phase, Vassa also depicts the shared empathy among the enslave Africans, helping us to see how they collaborated to survive.

His ongoing narrative offers one of the more balanced looks at slavery. Vassa clearly tells the horrors of this evil system and the people responsible for it. At the same time, he often shares accounts of Europeans and White Americans who befriended him. In fact, his positive statements about non-Africans lend further credence to his critique of the many evils of slavery.

His narrative also contains unique elements in his descriptions of his path toward freedom and his life as a freeman. We learn that in his era, for a man of his race, it was barely more tolerable to be free, given the hatred that he still endured.

Though some reviewers tend to minimize or criticize it, his conversion narrative is classic. In fact, it may well have been the standard from which later testimonies were crafted about how "God struck me dead." Perhaps the evangelical nature of his conversion turns off some. However, if we are to engage Vassa in his other accounts, we must engage him here. Further, coming as it did later in his life, it is easy to see how his account of his entire life is entirely shaped by his conversion experience. Clearly, Vassa sees even the evils that he has suffered as part of a larger plan. In doing so he never suggests that God condones the evils of slavery. Rather, he indicates that God created beauty from ashes.

Amazing Primary Source History

Hemingway said of Tillie Olsen's "Tell Me a Riddle" that, however many readers it may have, it will never have enough. He expressed my feelings about this book. Yes, the "Autobiography of Frederick Douglass" is critical to achieve an understanding of the obscenities of black slavery in the New World, but Equiano's remarkable account dramatizes it in ways even more diverse. He summarizes in his single life the whole span of slavery, from his kidnapping as a child from Africa to the fiendish brutality of Caribbean sugar plantations. But he is also a celebration of the indomitability of the human spirit at its most resilient: from his insistence, against all odds, on his own worth as a person, his acquisition of seafaring and business skills, his achievement not only of literacy but of an Englishman's 18th century eloquence.

I didn't think I could learn more about the particular brutalities of slavery, but I did. An example: in the Caribbean some slavemasters "rented out" their slaves by the day to other masters for excruciating toil. Their temporary masters sometimes "forgot" to feed them lunch, and moreover sometimes sent them back to their masters without payment. For retribution, their masters then beat the slaves! This was a new twist for me, and reminded me that the psychological torture--imagining the starved and exhausted slaves returning to their masters, knowing what was awaiting--often outstripped physical torture for cruelty.

But this is no litany of abuses, and Equiano is careful to spare us gratuitous outrages. He lived the equivalent of five or six lives within his timespan, and the book likewise breaks up into episodes: the African years--during which he chronicles a clime of abundant food and privileged childhood; his adventures at sea, serving several captains on mercantile ships that faced enemy fire and perils of every kind; his strivings to buy his freedom in the Caribbean and North America; his conversion to Christianity; and his settling as a freeman in England with marriage to a British wife.

As with most primary source documents, there are lulls in the narrative. The writing about the author as a Christian aware of his "sins" (he who has so overwhelmingly sinned against) is as familiar as it is ironic. Episodes in the seafaring accounts will be of more interest to afficionados of Melville or Conrad. But what is finally amazing is Equiano's moderation and modesty in describing a most remarkable life. One wonders how many hundreds of thousands of uprooted Africans succumbed to the brutalization and denial of their self-worth for every one who managed to salvage some shred of dignity, but one is nevertheless grateful to Equiano for putting his own example in writing.

It is writing for the ages. I wonder whether it should be required reading, for high school students, for example. Perhaps it's a bit too difficult or tedious for everyone in that age group. But at the very least it should be mentioned in the same breath as Douglass's books. I was 62 before I'd even heard Equiano's name. This remarkable account should be better known.

About the Author

Alvin I. Goldman is Board of Governors Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A leading epistemologist for several decades, his books include Reliabilism and Contemporary Epistemology (2012) and Pathways to Knowledge (2002).

Matthew McGrath is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has published on a range of topics in epistemology and is best known for work on pragmatic encroachment, including Knowledge in an Uncertain World (2009).

About the Author
Hal A. Huggins DDS, MS, the world's most controversial dentist because of his stand on trying to convince dentistry to stop the use of mercury in fillings, has been in practice 42 years in Colorado Springs. He is a leading pioneer in identifying toxic dental materials and balancing body chemistry. Over the past four decades, he developed a multi-disciplined health care model that has been influential in improving autoimmune diseases such as MS, Lupus, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. Other symptoms such as chronic fatigue, depression, and memory and digestive problems have also responded.

Dr. Huggins earned a post-doctoral Master's with emphasis on immunology and toxicology from the University of Colorado. Controversial in his stand against deception in dental regulations and practices, Dr. Huggins has been on the cutting edge of dentistry since the beginning of his practice. An abbreviated introduction to Melvin Page's work

Hal Huggins DDS was a protege of Melvin Page, a Florida dentist who pioneered the study of endocrine imbalances and ill-health. Huggins has done an extremely good job of summarizing the categories that Page described as "andric" and "gynic," as well as other endocrine imbalances.

In a nutshell, Page and Huggins correctly contend that the estrogens and testosterone and their metabolites exert different levels of effects in different people, and that this affects their personality, matrimonial bliss, and health. By administering miniscule doses of the "imbalanced" hormones, Page and Huggins were able to bring about dramatic results to "seemingly" unrelated illnesses. There are anecdotes, not mentioned in this book, that Page was even - in a few isolated cases - able to reverse cancer.

Page also investigated disequilibria of other endocrine glands, such as the thyroid, the anterior and posterior pituitary, the adrenals, and pancreas. In the 1950s, when Page did his research, his work was truly amazing; today, when doctors can easily run tests to measure individual hormones, it's regrettable that his work has not been expounded on, and developed further.

Both Huggins and Page are quite convincing, and worth reading.

Disappointing

I learned a valuable lesson with this purchase ... always look at the item details. I love Cecelia Ahern's work and was excited to see a new book by her. I was very disappointed when it arrived and for $11 I got less than 50 pages. This book was written to encourage reading in Ireland but I don't think the $11 price tag will do that.

The story was cute and simple and very much like her other works. I can't complain about the content, exactly. I was just disappointed with the cost to page ratio.

So, it is a nice read and a cute story but wait to buy it until you aren't paying 25 cents a page.

I enjoyed every morsel of this book!

To be perfectly honest....this book caught my eye while at the library because of the ice cream on the cover. Haha, never go to the library snackish...or maybe I should, because this was a great little read. I have my hands tied not to go into too much detail due to this being a short book, or I would give away the whole thing. So here is my condensed, but hopefully helpful view:
Emelda, the main character of this book, is absolutely amazing and someone I could see myself quickly making friends with! She is overweight and very much down on her luck in love, and in her friendships and also in her family life. However, through all this she finally decides enough is enough and starts doing things to try and changer her situations all the way around. Every little bit helps and finally finding support can help too...if she ever finds that. I think the reason I loved this book the most is because I could relate to Emelda completely. Right down to how her pig of an ex husband treats her because he thinks he can. I also laughed out loud about how all her memories are quickly related to ice cream flavors. This puts a smile on my face, even as I type this. You hear how songs or restaurants or smells do this for people, but for Emelda it's ice cream flavors. This is hilarious and amazing all at the same time to me!!!

Like I said, I can't detail much more because of the short read, but trust me you just MUST pick up this book and read it. I found myself laughing, almost crying, and cheering all throughout this read. It is short and quick and easy to read, so just take the time to do it! If you love it like I did, it was well worth it and if you for some reason hate it, well you didn't waste much time reading it. But I highly encourage you to read it!

Simple and sensible, a must read.

In the twenty first century we are living in a so called flat world that is border-less and where geography is history, thanks to Globalization. Despite this generalization that is widely accepted, the ground reality is very different when it comes to the exponentially increasing interactions between individuals across cultures that are virtually poles apart. Business executives of global companies in particular are suddenly grappling with the challenges of working in cross cultural teams that require unique interpersonal skills. Vivek Vaidya deserves kudos for aptly summarizing his experiences in this short book from an Indian perspective. His style is simple conversational, with lots of interesting anecdotes, deep personal insights and integrity.

Many westerners still believe that India is a mystical place of snake charmers, sadhus and tigers. This is despite the deep respect that few of them have developed for India’s rich cultural heritage and social values that have been so well researched by books like ‘A search in Secret India’ by Paul Brunton. Those who understand India love and admire her, and know more about India than the average well educated Indian. Indians on the other hand do find it difficult to interact with majority of westerners when it comes to discussion on Indian Culture, beliefs and traditions, partly due to ignorance and partly due to a feeling of inferiority due to lower incomes.

If I have to summarize the core of this book, it would be to reproduce a few lines:

‘…. conversations between foreigners and Indians are based on mutual disrespect. Both parties think that the other party is a fool that can’t understand something as obvious as the basic. The fact is what is obvious and basic in one country is unimaginable in the other.’

Many Multinational companies in India have understood this issue and try to sensitize their executives through cross cultural trainings. I recommend this book to all HR Managers of global companies in India for distribution to budding managers who need to work and win in cross cultural global teams.

This book is an excellent effort on an important topic, especially when India is embarking on ambitious plans like ‘Make in India’.

Why do Indians is the marvelous book, full of information explaining the particular behavior of the Indians which at times appears inexplicable.

India in itself is a very divergent country with 29 states and 7 union territories. Each state can have its own language with varied dialect. The cultures in each of these states can be extremely different and more driven by traditions or past practices. So understanding Indians with its own customs in each part of country at times can be really challenging for people from other part of the world. With such a diversity even the manner of celebrating festival can be different. Certain practices followed may appear quite confusing and irrational.

The book unravel the mystery and bring the facts and underlying logic to fore for people to understand. Reading these logic, one can wonder how certain practices followed connects to rich history of this country. One can get to know this through "Why do Indians not eat beef?"

With the changing times and with growing population, Indians have been adopting fast to globalization and has Indianized some of the games such as Cricket. India has been best in the world in game of Cricket and each Indian prides itself of this game. The book takes us through "Why do Indians Love Cricket?" in very detailed manner.

With the growing population, there can be extreme pressure on resources in India. The demand can easily outclass the supply. By nature, Indians, would always be resilient and find their options to mitigate challenges faced by resources etc. There is unimaginable unpatented innovations happen in India, which keeps you amazed and at times entertained. "Why Indians are good at Jugaad?" brings the resilient nature of Indians through innovating at micro level.

I would strongly recommend this book for all Indians and also all the folks who deal with Indians to understand the particular behavior of the Indians. Though the observations need not be generalized and not all individuals will behave in the same way as discussed in the book, the broader explanations provided in the book are very much applicable.

First of all let me congratulate Vivek for venturing into books, I know him as a friend and as a blogger for long.

I have been staying outside India for over long and I see curiosity , questions , confusions , misunderstandings about Indians.
Vivek did a great job in identifying those FAQs and answer them in a way to make it interesting and acceptable.

This is a very engaging read which I wasn't able to put down until I finished . I would recommend this to all Global citizen Indians and non-Indians.

Pretty good information

I saw this book in a Vet' s waiting room and thought it may be helpful after a brief skimming over. I am a hobby breeder of a rare dog breed so only have a litter of puppies every 1 1/2 to 2 years. I was mostly interested in the genetic information. I found it fairly easy to understand and it shed a differing perspective for me on breeding for health and diversity. Q is a lot of information for the person who has multiple dogs and breed more often than I do. There was good information on appropriate kennel construction for health and safety, diet and nutrition ( if you feed kibble, which I do not) and whelping & puppy rearing. I general, it was well rounded and I got it aT a good price as a used book. Delivery was timely and it arrived in the condition as described by the seller. I gave it 3 stars, since I cannot use a lot of the information based on my breeding and feeding practice.

This book is intended as a senior level undergraduate textbook on communication systems for Electrical Engineering majors. Its primary objective is to introduce the basic techniques used in modern communication systems and to provide fundamental tools and methodologies used in the analysis and design of these systems. Although the book is mainly written as an undergraduate level textbook, it can be equally be useful to the practicing engineer, or as a self study tool.

The emphasis of the book is on digital communication systems, which are treated in detail in Chapters 7 through 13. These systems are the backbone of modern communication systems, including new generations of wireless communication systems, satellite communications, and data transmission networks. Traditional analog communication systems are also covered with due detail in Chapters 3, 4, and 6. In addition, the book provides detailed coverage of the background required for the course in two chapters, one on linear system analysis with emphasis on the frequency domain approach and Fourier techniques, and one on probability, random variables, and random processes. Although these topics are now covered in separate courses in the majority of electrical engineering colloquia, it is the experience of the authors that the students frequently need to review these topics in a course on communications, and therefore it is essential to have quick access the relevant material from these courses.

It is assumed that the students taking this course have background in calculus, linear algebra, basic electronic circuits, linear system theory, and probability and random variables. These latter two topics are reviewed in two chapters of the book.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

The book starts with a brief review of communication systems in Chapter 1 followed by methods of signal representation and system analysis in both time and frequency domains in Chapter 2. Emphasis is placed on the Fourier series and the Fourier transform representation of signals and the use of transforms in linear systems analysis.

Chapters 3 and 4 cover the modulation and demodulation of analog signals. In Chapter 3 amplitude modulation (AM), and in Chapter 4 frequency modulation (FM), and phase modulation (PM) are covered. Radio and television broadcasting and analog mobile radio cellular communication systems are also treated in these chapters.

In Chapter 5, we present a review of the basic definitions and concepts in probability and random processes. Special emphasis is placed on Gaussian random processes, which provide mathematically tractable models for additive noise disturbances. Both time domain and frequency domain representations of random signals are presented.

Chapter 6 covers the effects of additive noise in the demodulation of amplitude modulated (AM) and angle modulated (FM,PM) analog signals and a comparison of these analog signal modulations in terms of their signal-to-noise ratio performance. Also discussed in this chapter is the problem of estimating the carrier phase using a phase-locked loop (PLL). Finally, we describe the characterization of thermal noise and the effect of transmission losses in analog communication systems.

Chapter 7 is devoted to analog-to-digital conversion. Sampling theorem and quantization techniques are treated first, followed by waveform encoding methods including PCM, DPCM, and DM. This chapter concludes with brief discussion of LPC speech coding and the JPEG standard for image compression.

Chapter 8 treats modulation methods for baseband AWGN channels. Various types of binary and non-binary modulation methods are described based on a geometric representation of signals and their performance is evaluated in terms of the probability of error. The final topic of this chapter is focused on signal synchronization methods for digital communication systems.

In Chapter 9, we consider the problem of digital communication through bandlimited, AWGN channels. The effect of channel distortion on the transmitted signals is characterized in terms of intersymbol interference (ISI) and the design of adaptive equalizers for suppressing ISI is described.

Digital signal transmission via carrier modulation is described in Chapter 10. The carrier modulation methods treated in this chapter are pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), phase-shift keying (PSK), quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM), frequency-shift keying (FSK), and continuous-phase frequency-shift keying (CPFSK).

A number of selected topics in digital communications are treated in Chapter 11. Topics include digital communication in fading multipath channels, multicarrier modulation (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing), spread spectrum signals and systems, a brief description of the GSM and IS95 digital cellular communication systems, and link budget analysis in free space (line-of-sight) channels.

Chapter 12 is focused on the basic limits on communication of information, including the information content of memoryless sources and the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise channel. Two widely used algorithms for encoding the output of igital sources, namely, the Huffman coding algorithm and the Lempel-Ziv algorithm are also described in this chapter.

Chapter 13, the last chapter in the book, treats channel coding and decoding. Linear block codes and convolutional codes are described for enhancing the performance of a digital communication system in the presence of additive, white Gaussian node. Both hard-decision and soft-decision decoding of block and convolutional codes are also treated. Coding for bandwidth limited channels (trellis coded modulation), turbo codes, and low density parity check codes are also treated in this chapter.

Throughout the book many worked examples are provided to emphasize the use of the techniques developed in theory. Each chapter follows with a large number of problems at different levels of difficulty. The problems in each chapter are followed by a selection of computer problems which usually ask for simulation of various algorithms developed in that chapter using MATLAB. The solutions to the MATLAB problems are made available on the PH website for the book.

COURSE OPTIONS

This book can serve as a text in either a one-semester or a two-semester course in communication systems. An important consideration in the design of the course is whether or not the students have had a prior course in probability and random processes. Another important consideration is whether or not analog modulation and demodulation techniques are to be covered. Below, we outline three scenarios. Others are certainly possible.

Best book for Communication

I strongly suggest this book for anybody willing to understand the basics of communication and beyond. Be prepared for some high level mathematics.
Some of the proves are not worked out into the fine details. It assumes that you are smart enough to work it out the "minutia" of some proves.

Skips through important concepts too quickly

I am using this book in 2 courses - Signals & Random Processes, and Digital Transmission. Although the material is very in-depth, unless you already know the material and just need a refresher, you will probably find out that it's very hard to follow what the authors say. If I was relying on this book alone, I wouldn't have understood a thing.

They jump from one major topic to another on the same page without explaining the concepts in depth. There are very few examples to help you understand the concepts.

If you have the choice, I would recommend against this book and would recommend John Wiley's Introduction to Analog & Digital Communications, or a book with the same title by Michael Fitz.

Sparse, laden with typos/errors

Frankly, this book is really poor. The material presented is sparse and sometimes ambiguous, and if your professor teaches straight from the book without providing any examples/information of his or her own, you will likely struggle.

Perhaps more importantly, there are *many* typos in the problems at the end of each chapter (which the professor has to continually correct - this isn't just my own interpretation). Scale is frequently wrong (Hz vs. kHz vs. Mhz, etc.), leading to nonsensical or unobtainable solutions, variables get mislabeled, and more. These errors make the book even more difficult to learn from, as the lack of confidence in the practice problems really compounds the students' sense of uncertainty.

I am kind of shocked that the book was published in this state. It's a first edition, so a certain lack of polish is to be expected, but c'mon guys, I shouldn't feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle to learn the material.

By way of fairness, I will say that the book is very well organized and structured, and I think the block diagrams in particular, depicting a signal's path through the described system, are very informative.

Regarding my credibility, I am in the very top of my class at a fairly new but well-respected School for Engineering, studying EE.
