Good logic book

This book was executed clearly and well. All the points were made directly. The author did not waste any time at all talking about un-needed material.
Examples also aided in understanding. Stories and word problems illustrated the concepts extremely well and the reader knew why the problem worked the way it did, which also helped to understand.
Questions (and answers provided in the back) gave a chance to test yourself to see what you knew and what you didn't. My only critisism would be in this aspect of the book in which I found some of the questions irrelevant such as: Find and discuss some clear and some possible examples of 'tonypandy.' I found that this had not relevance whatsoever to Logic or Philosophy in any way. It seemed as if Mary Haight just stuck the passage and question in the book so that it would be longer.
Overall, one of the best logic books I have seen.

Clearly a course-specific textbook

How can you resist a logic text which begins, "The Snake and the Fox were rivals to lead a gang of thieves. The Snake proposed a test: 'By night and by day a hundred priests with knives guard the One-Eyed God of Zorro, in a room within a room within a room. Let whoever steals the God's Ruby Eye become our leader'"? (Which shows you where the title comes from - it's not an Isaiah Berlin reference.)

What do you expect from a freshman logic textbook? There was no magically sudden insightful clear thinking, but it does do a good job as an introductory text; written mostly in plain English instead of symbols, it builds nicely, and analyzes sample problems from sources like "Catch-22," "Foundation and Empire," and "Very Good, Jeeves" which make for fun reading. On the other hand, Haight starts to use more formulas and more structured proofs in the latter half of the book, and serious proofreading errors unfortunately crop up in those formulas and proofs which really interfere with the reading. Yes, you could argue it means I had to pay closer attention to the text and think harder about the content than I otherwise would have, and so I might have learned more; on the other hand, it means the book was no longer my partner and friend in learning but became instead my opponent to overcome. It became a struggle of willpower to finish.

The good parts of the book merit four stars, easily; the sloppy editing, one. I think I might enjoy taking Haight's class in person, but I could not enjoy reading this book. So I give it two on average, rounding down because a logic textbook with typos in the proofs is like a grimoire with errors in spelling.

There are quite a few occasions where an important concept is not explained or is explained poorly.
Also, the index is confusing and poorly organized.

A small gem of a novel from the Emerald Isle

Nothing like waiting out wicked winter weather and a bad cold with the companionship of a good piece of chick lit, especially when it comes from one of the great and gifted Irish storytellers.

Once upon a time I was a regular Maeve Binchy reader, but I'd long ago drifted away--having grown tired of too many plots based around class issues and out-of-wedlock pregnancies and miserable marriages there was no way out of--and I'd moved on to other authors like Colm Toibin, William Trevor, Anabel Davis Goff and Deirdre Madden. But when I was offered an opportunity to get an advance look at the newest Binchy novel, I took it and I'm glad I did. I'd forgotten how gifted Binchy is at creating a cast of characters you quickly come to care about and bringing them and their stories so vividly to life.

While misery, unwed motherhood, unrequited love and alcoholism all figure prominently into this story, they're more than balanced out by the determined efforts and optimism of a can-do American cousin and the arrival of a motherless child. Watching cousin Emily and wee Frankie give a whole neighborhood a new lease on life makes for a very good read and I recommend it.

Heartwarming and Lovely ...

Every single time I pick up a Maeve book, it is like coming home after a long exhausting trip and falling into that comfortable easy chair, with the endless cups of hot tea at your side and all the favorite characters in Dublin hovering around ... if only life can be that comforting!! I read Maeve for the reasons I have stated above and for the fact that she really is a talented writer, who manages to keep the reader's interest in ordinary characters. Ordinary characters with ordinary concerns and issues ... and yet somehow she makes them special and interesting. She writes compellingly of life in Ireland that some day I must go there and see with my own eyes the beautiful land she loves so deeply.

I was so excited to get this advanced copy that I managed to read this within two days ... it helps that I am snowed in as well. I hated to see the end of this book as I didn't want to let go of the characters. I hope Binchy will write another one soon ... especially about that annoying social worker, Moira. I'd like to know what happened to her!! She is probably the most annoying and pathetic character I have yet to read from Binchy's collection. Unable to grasp that a recovering alcoholic can raise a baby and do it so well with the love and support of so many, Moira always expect the worst of people.

A lot of familiar characters have been re-introduced such as Muttie and Lizzie Scarlet, the twins, Noel, the young and dashing doctor who is happily married and his parents; they all play a minor role in this novel but their lives are entwined with Noel, the young father mentioned above. Noel was a drifting loner, bored out of his skull with his life and finding solace in the bottom of his cups. His parents were more concerned about their religious convictions and didn't know what to do with their lonely, morose son. Then one day, a former flame contacted Noel and told him that he's the father of her unborn child. Noel, who had just decided to stop drinking and do something with his life, was stunned and overwhelmed, but with the support of his parents and his American cousin, Emily (who really was the glue of everyone in the community), he agreed to raise the motherless baby. Even with the constant scrutiny of the social worker, Moira, Noel manages to turn his life around.

This is such a heart-warming novel and full of interesting characters. Some will say this is a predictable book but there are times in life when a novel like this one just is the cure for what ails you. It is full of interesting characters and stories, told only by a talented author like Maeve can.

Maeve's fans will love this book as well ... so don't hesitate to pick up this book!!

A Timeless Novel

There is something comforting in a Maeve Binchy novel. There are no pyrotechnics or earth-shattering histrionics in MINDING FRANKIE yet it manages to hold and keep one's attention throughout. I think it is Binchy's unparalleled knack for creating characters one truly cares about. Even the most reviled character in this wonderful book (Moira Tierney...the social worker from Hell) is relatable as we come to know her life's circumstances.

You will find yourself rooting for the protagonist at the heart of MINDING FRANKIE. Noel is an ex-alcoholic who is teetering precariously on the precipice of sobriety when he is faced with raising a baby on his own. The cast of characters he surrounds himself with are all supportive and come to his aid when he needs help with Frankie, the baby girl he "inherits." The characters are the real heart of this novel. They are funny, sympathetic, flawed and real people whom we come to know well and identify with. I couldn't wait to crawl into bed each night and escape to the Emerald Isle with all my new "friends."

While we are introduced to new characters in MINDING FRANKIE there are a lot of familiar faces from Binchy's previous works. This is a stand-alone novel, but many of the characters were introduced in other books such as QUENTINS, SCARLET FEATHER and HEART AND SOUL. It is not necessary to read the other books before starting MINDING FRANKIE, but it certainly enhances the reading experience by having a past with them.

The reason I called this book timeless is because if it weren't for the occasional reference to cell phones, the internet and other modern conveniences one would find it diificult to determine if this book takes place in 1950 or 2011. The story is classic and transcends time.

The one criticism I could find is that there are a LOT of characters to keep track of, and the author often refers to them by first-name only. I had to stop reading several times and go back and try to figure out how they fit in. It is a minor criticism of a book I truly loved. I highly recommend this book if you like calming, character-driven well told tales.

About the Author
Darrell Young (aka Digital Darrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer in the East Tennessee, USA area. He is a member of Professional Photographers of America, the North American Nature Photography Association, and Nikon Professional Services--and adheres to the ethical guidelines of those fine organizations. Darrell has been photographing people, events, and places professionally for over 30 years, with a special interest in natural history.   His mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera in 1968 at the young age of 10 years and awakened a lifelong interest in capturing slices of time. Living in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains--near Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway--has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.   Since about 2000 Darrell has been an active blogger and article writer on photographic subjects. In 2008 his first photography book was published and, since then, he has authored over a dozen books on the technical side of photography, with a special interest in helping new photographers fully understand their complex cameras so they can use them for more effective and enjoyable photography.

I just received the book after pre-ordering it at the end of 2015 and have thoroughly enjoyed reading through many areas. It provides very good, understandable and meaningful lessons within. The camera's original manual hits most of the points but in a very cryptic manner. Mastering the Nikon D7200 hits those points with a comprehensible technique that'll not cross your eyes! I've shot with the 7200 since last year when I first purchased one when just released. Love it! This book hits the mark of what I needed. I especially found value in the so very sought-after video section. In the original 7200 manual little is said about focus modes, etc. This book explains it well and will help prevent those all too easy and terrible mistakes during a shoot. All facets of camera operation are carefully explained so that the first time user- all the way to an old-timer will find great value here. I'm enjoying the writing style and the fulfilling content Darrell Young provides.

I as well give potential buyers a caution... Just get the HARD COPY book! Be careful on buying electronic copies. It'll be solid money- well spent, and then you can fold the pages over (marking specific areas) or use your highlighter pen. It'll make a great reference to boost your knowledge. This will be a book that I don't get too far from as I prepare for any shoot.

The hard copy book is about 1.2" thick, printed on good paper stock and with color photos and reference images within.

The only Nikon D7200 book you'll ever need

This is a review of "Mastering the the Nikon D7200," but I have a history with the author's work that is worth mentioning. I first discovered Darrell's work in 2009 when I received the Nikon D90 as a gift. I had decided it was time to learn how to shoot manually and figured the best place to start was with a how-to manual for the camera I owned, plus a lot of experimentation and reading on photography in general. I don't remember how I came across "Mastering the Nikon D90," but I was hooked from the beginning. Darrell's straightforward discussion of each camera feature, broken down into easy to reference sections, plus his suggested settings jump-started my learning process. "Mastering the Nikon D7000" was equally excellent, and now I am pleased to own this one.

While I may also order the electronic copy of this book, I particularly enjoy having the hardcover. The book is visually pleasing and well-organized, with an extensive index. If you are familiar with the other books in the series, you will find things satisfyingly consistent. But the best part of this book is the straightforward discussion about the myriad features of the Nikon D7200, starting with initial camera set-up. There are choices to make, and Darrell makes these distinctions easy to understand. But lest you think this book is just for a beginner, it is not. Darrell manages to impart the simple information necessary to become familiar with the camera's basic features, but also delves deeper for those who are ready for or needing more in depth information, as well as including helpful links with further information.

The book is thick enough to feel the satisfaction of knowing that if you read it all, you'll be light years ahead of many D7200 owners, but not so thick that you can't take it with you when you need to. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I've purchased other 3rd party camera books in the past, but this one really stands out. What I like about it is the help the author gives in setting up your camera's menus and options, along with color photos of how to do it. Great reference book, well written, and an excellent purchase.

3.5 stars. Enjoyed the book, but would've liked a more finished ending.

Erika starts off as a weak character, but grows throughout the story. She tends to have panic attacks when out in large crowds, but is strong enough to face her fears.

Chris, who is her retiring father's right hand man, starts of the story looking like the best guy in the world, but starts to show his true colors pretty quickly when Erika quits following him around with puppy dog eyes.

Max, who is her father's and family business's biggest competitor, starts off the book as the lesser of the two men. He talks about wanting to take over the company. When he first sees Erika, I'm thinking he was going to use her to help him achieve this goal. This is not the case.

Chris and Max have a past history. Max had dated Chris's older sister, who is also completely unstable. The question becomes, was she that way before or just after Max and her split up. Chris is pretty sure it she is unstable because of the sexual deviant lifestyle that Max introduces her to.

There is also Christine, who is Max's business partner in The Gate, a BDSM club in Brooklyn. She is a great secondary character who I hope will get her own story told at some point. She has quite a history and I think her story is one that deserves to be told. I also hope she gets a happily ever after is some way.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. If you like Tiffany Reisz, you will notice many similarities, but no priest (damn). I could really see the influence that Tiffany had on this book. I could also see the small part that the Sleepy Beauty Trilogy had on the book as well. The pony play is very similar, but these are all willing individuals, unlike the Anne Rice books.

I give it 3.5 stars instead of 4 only because of the ending. To me it was not only a cliffhanger, but the ending really felt unfinished. I have way too many unanswered questions that I felt should've been answered in this book and not pushed to the next book. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers in any sense. They drive me crazy, but this seems more to me than that, like I said unfinished. I can't go into really anymore without spoilers for the ending.

All that being said, I did enjoy the book and can't wait for the next one. I hope see where all the characters go. I have some ideas in my head, where I think they are going. With some, I hope I'm right and with others, I hope I'm wrong.

Hot, but not always realistic

This book was raw and edgy. It's definitely NOT a book for someone who is afraid to explore the darker side of BDSM - most of the sex scenes in here are not "pretty" or tied up in neat little bows. The language can be crude, and the situations are definitely very adult. The writing is well done, and the sex can be very erotic, but it is definitely brutal and hard. It's a good exploration of a BDSM Club atmosphere/lifestyle.

At times I found myself getting annoyed with the main character Erika; it was difficult for me to identify with her. She puts up with a lot of crap from her old crush Chris (towards the end of the book she basically allows him to come extremely close to raping her and "likes" it, and then continues to associate with him...huh???)
This definitely kept me from giving this a four star review, and I'm not sure if I will read the sequel because it says that she is torn between a relationship with Chris or Max, and I'm not down with reading about her being interested in a man who tried to rape her.

I just don't get the attraction once she learns who Chris truly is - what adult woman would seriously consider a man who forced himself (not in a planned way) on her? Before that scene I was totally gung ho on the novel, and then I got turned off. Not quite sure why the author chose to take that turn... I'm actually kinda bummed, because I was into the story before the weird ending...

That being said, I DO like the way she writes (her style) and I would definitely check out other books she's written.

Maybe the hot weather that puts me in a bad mood is to blame, or maybe it's the book. Likely, both. Thus it's difficult to review K. T. Grant's THE GATE without shouting or sweating, so have these lists:

ANNOYING TROPES
-Billionaire owns a BDSM club.
-Authors are best-sellers (rather than midlist).
-Virgin millionaire.
-Man declares woman "the one" the first time they root.
-Virgin and the switch are in love.
-Unprotected sex because virgins don't have diseases, and contraceptive pills ALWAYS work?

OVERALL PROBLEMS
-Info-dump via dialogue.
-Secondary character more interesting than main character. But then secondary character becomes less interesting, too.
-Main character is relatable, but not likeable or interesting.
-All the emotions seem false, so the relationships aren't believable. Like a soap opera - stuff happens, but you don't care.
-Blurred lines between rape and willing submission.
-Obvious foreshadowing.
-Main character's father just died, and her two d-bag men are fighting - verbally and physically - about her in the hospital. Insensitive on so many counts.
-Main character playing at being dominant is so not believable, like a little kid playing dress-up. Pretending to be a switch does not make you one. So this sequence is plain ridiculous.

All this said, should the sequel - like this - turn up on NetGalley, I will request it without hesitation. Because like a soap opera, it's addictive.

A great starting place for the independent animator.

This book is a great guide to the starting animator, covering all aspects of animation with some general information of everything. This new digital edition is more comprehensive than the first edition because it explains how to use the computer as a tool for animation in both the 2D and 3D formats.

GREAT INTRODUCTION TO ANIMATION TECHNIQUES

This is a great book for both students of animation and anyone out there who just wants to know more about that thing called animation. Laybourne is very easy to read and goes step-by-step through various animation processes in such an accessible way that its almost entertaining.

If you have a serious interest or just a passing interest, this is a great book!

Increasingly dated

The Animation Book is a fairly comprehensive review of traditional animation methods, with a few remarks on digital technology integrated into that workflow. Despite the updated title's mention of 3D, this book is not a valuable reference for 3D animators - or even for 2D digital animators (Flash, for example).

Indeed, that is its greatest disappointment. The book is far more of a historical reference than an introduction to contemporary production methods.
