Francis Abiola Irele, formerly Professor of French, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, was for several years Professor of African, French, and Comparative Literature at the Ohio State University. After retiring from Ohio State in 2003, he became Visiting Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Among his many publications are The Cambridge History of African and Caribbean Literature (edited with Simon Gikandi) and two collections of essays, The African Experience in Literature and Ideology and The African Imagination: Literature in Africa and the Black Diaspora. Heather James, Ph.D. Berkeley, is Associate Professor of English at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Shakespeare’s Troy: Drama, Politics, and the Translation of Empire.

Stephen Owen, Ph.D. Yale, is James Bryant Conant Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Harvard University. His books include The Great Age of Chinese Poetry: The High T’ang; Traditional Chinese Poetry and Poetics: An Omen of the World; Remembrances: The Experience of the Past in Classical Chinese Literature; and An Anthology of Chinese Literature: Beginnings to 1911.

Good set of books......

The main reason I like this set of books is that with all the footnotes contained in the stories, it is extremely easy to follow a plot. Another reason I like these books is that they are broken up into three volumes. It is much easier to lug around a 1000 page book than a 3000 page book. They are a necessary evil in College World Lit, but they are definitely the best of what is out there.

Part of the Best Anthology Series Ever

This is part of a set of the best literature anthology's in print-possibly ever. Norton publishes not only a set on World literature, but also sets on English and American literature. These sets are designed for college lit classes. All of these sets survey their titled literatures very well and contain the works of all the well-known writers and also many writers that are less known. I enjoy going through these volumes and discovering really good writers and works I had never known before. I give all the volumes in all the Norton series my highest recommendation.

Today it is possible to extend their usefulness to provide steels with desired characteristics. The description of why and how additions of the rare earths affect micro- and nano-structures in steels which provide these beneficial modifications is explored.

Chapter two reviews ternary and higher-order nitride materials. The synthesis of ternary compounds is examined and the products are categorized by their composition and the nature of the chemical bonding they exhibit. The structures of the compounds are discussed where possible.

The spectral intensities of f-f transitions in lanthanide compounds are discussed at length in the following chapter. The authors present an exhaustive consideration of the unique appearance of intraconfigurational electronic transitions in f-type materials, particularly the lanthanides.

The final chapter reviews the prodigious literature on the organometallic &pgr; complexes of the f-elements. The authors consider the main classes of complexes of both the lanthanide and actinide organometallics, and synthesis and structure are dealt with in particular.

While most modern mysteries set in Alaska concentrate on the damage done to the ecology or the strange personalities who take refuge in this arctic vastness, Sue Henry's books are more straightforward and usually more fun. In such stories as Deadfall and the Anthony Award-winning Murder on the Iditarod Trail, Henry follows in the sled and snowshoe tracks of writers like Jack London and Robert W. Service, who realized that Alaska was the last great frontier of adventure. Her characters, like champion sled-dog racer Jessie Arnold, are welcome throwbacks to a simpler period when physical challenge was a healthy way to measure self-esteem.

Jessie is testing herself in the thousand-mile Yukon Quest race, which follows the old mail trail from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, when one of the other racers is kidnapped and held for ransom. The kidnappers insist that only Jessie can deliver the money, and it has to be on the most dangerous leg of the race. Any attempt to involve the police will result in the victim's death. Of course, the worst blizzard of the year blows up just as the race gets to that point, and it goes without saying that Jessie risks herself and her beloved dog team to recover the victim and capture the bad guys. Even if the thought of somebody shouting "Mush!" fills you with silent laughter, you're sure to be gripped by Henry's ability to recreate the pleasures and perils of an arcane sport in a breathtaking landscape. --Dick Adler

Alaska's spectacular, dangerous wilderness forms the background to Henry's engaging, if overplotted, sixth novel (after Deadfall). Professional musher Jessie Arnold is in peril, this time on the Yukon Quest, "the toughest dogsled race in the world," which runs over 1000 miles from Whitehorse, Canada, to Fairbanks, Alaska. Early in the race, novice musher Debbie Todd is captured and held for $200,000 ransom. The kidnappers demand that Debbie's frantic stepfather give Jessie the money for delivery during the race, warning them both that Debbie will die if they inform the police. But Jessie secretly notifies her good friend, Inspector Charles Delafosse, before she tackles the race's most demanding leg. In a climactic finish, Jessie almost loses her life when she confronts the criminals on American Summit during a blinding blizzard. Throughout this turmoil, Jessie is also trying to sort out her feelings for her lover, State Trooper Alex Jensen, who's at his father's funeral in Idaho. Henry decorates her novel with glorious evocations of Alaska, believable characters, interesting mushing lore and deft explanations of dogsledding mechanics. But the story suffers from a thin plot that leans on obvious clues and unlikely coincidences. Go to the dogs, sled style with a mystery

Another good sled dog racing tale by ann author who knows her region and makes the background real. If you are a long distance race fan, you won't be able to find many slip-ups in her description of the race from a musher's point of view. The mystery is absorbing and kept me guessing although I am a bigger sled dog than mystery fan. The characters have depth and realism, no stereotypes, and the subtle romance works well.

Another winner from Sue Henry!

I discovered Sue Henry only a few months ago and devoured all her books in a short period of time. I read them in almost one sitting.
Ms. Henry's books concentrate on Alaskan history and an environment few of us can imagine, fabulous characters, and page-turning mystery and excitement. I find that I'm torn between Evelyn Wood-ing it to find out what happens and re-reading passages again and again because of the flow of the words and the descriptive phrases and language.
Jessie Arnold is taking her team on the Yukon Quest this year, instead of the familiar Iditarod. The Yukon Quest is run shortly before the Iditarod and she's decided to try the race from Canada into Fairbanks, Alaska. It's earlier in the year, the trail is rougher and the conditions harsher, but she's eagerly up to the challenge.
Racing, or involved behind-the-scenes, are several friends and acquaintances, legends and loners. It's exciting when you realize that this race, like the Iditarod, honors people who forged this area for the rest of us. A wonderful mix of history and current events, the race gets going and a novice racer is kidnapped and Jessie is singled out by the kidnappers to be the go-between.
Plus, Jessie's got her own personal problems to sort out. Gee, as if running the race for the first time weren't enough to deal with!
I love this book and was truly sorry to get to the end of it. July 5th can't come fast enough for me - that's when Ms. Henry's next book comes out.

Leaves You Wanting More

Ms. Henry is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Beginning with Murder On The Iditarod Trail, her tales of life and death in Alaska have never failed to impress me. In this story, Jessie Arnold is once again testing herself and her dogs on a long and difficult race, the Yukon Quest. The courage and stamina needed for such an endeavor is brought vividly to life by Sue Henry. The mystery, although a good one, is almost secondary to the wonderful descriptions of the snow covered wilds of Alaska. It leaves you wanting more.

Read classics, learn Russian

This dual-language book features twelve shortstories by 19th-century masters of Russian literature. The pages are specially formatted with Russian Cyrillic on the left opposed by English translation on the right. The Russian and English texts match eachother nearly line-for-line, simplifying cross-reference. Here is an entertaining way to enrich vocabulary and perfect syntax, for the intermediate to advanced student who already has the basics of grammar. The editor chose some great examples of Russian writing, including Pushkin's haunting "Stationmaster", Gogol's grotesque "Nose", and Dostoevski's macabre graveyard drama "Bobok". Only one thing detracts from the book's usefulness as a learning tool, which is that many of the phrases and expressions are somewhat archaic. There are several dual-language compilations of contemporary (Soviet) shortstories available, for those who prefer to familiarize themselves with more modern language usage.

Duel language books provide a gift of reading for Russian friends

This book is a wonderful rare find. I am a friend/neighbor of highly educated recent Russian immigrants with limited expertise in English. Although they are taking English classes, it is almost impossible for them to find interesting books to read in English beyond those of a childrens book reading level. Having to use a Russian/English dictionary while reading eliminates a lot of the simple pleasures that reading provides. This book's dual language format is absolutely perfect. They can finally enjoy a book written in English that reflects their reading interests due to the fact that the exact Russian version resides on the opposing page. This dual language format is also an absolutely perfect tool for English students learning the Russian language. It gave me so much pleasure to provide them with this opportunity to both practice and better enjoy reading books in English. I only wish that there were a lot more books available in this style for my friends to enjoy....

With stories by Tolstoy, Pushkin, Gogol and Chekov this is a great book to help you improve your Russian skills and read the masterworks in the original. It's a great way to check your Russian against the English tranlsation on the opposite page.
The book itself has been around for several years and while it is a bit expensive for what you get used editions are fairly common. My only real criticism is that this is one of the few dual readers available in the US on the Russian language. Hopefully the publishers will remedy this by printing another volume. A real must for Russian language students.

I took a chance thinking how can she trump Jesus Calling, well she did. You can tell this is a spiritual labor of love. The anointing and energy that had to be in the room when she wrote this must have been amazing. Just buy this and g8ft it to friends in need

Another awesome Sarah Young devotional

I was anxiously waiting the release of this devotional and this did not disappoint me. Sarah Young has a way with writing devotions as if it was Jesus speaking to us himself. I have every one of her devotionals and am thoroughly invested into this devotional and look forward to reading it every day. It is paired with the appropriate scripture and inspires me each day.
