A practical and insightful exploration into Buddhist meditation and science

Adeline van Waning's book "The less dust, the more trust" is a unique journey into mindfulness and awareness, into consciousness and the essence of what it is to be human. She tells the story of her participation in The Shamatha Project retreat (2007), embracing three months of concentration-calm meditations and scientific research into what happens to mind, thought and emotions, in a group of persons practising Buddhist meditation for many hours a day. She addresses the current research outcomes of this unique ongoing project, and adds more recent considerations.
The book is written from a contemplative and scientific point of view, and includes many personal elements about life during the Shamatha Project retreat. The author shares her reflections with many diary fragments about what she experienced, thought and felt. Every chapter offers a guided meditation in a way that the reader can `join in being on retreat,' for a direct experience into the themes the author addresses. The book makes meditation a very real and interesting activity, and shows that it - far from being an escape - provides a key to getting more familiarity with and control over one's emotions and thoughts, and to leading a more fulfilling life.
The author discusses important elements of Buddhist meditation like observing one's thoughts and emotions without getting involved in them, and tells her first-hand experiences. When increasingly she could let go of habitual attachment to self, she could feel that not she did things but that things happened through her, resulting in experiences of spaciousness and openness, with feelings of subtle lightness and joy. She noticed how sometimes there was the sense of transcending her physical senses and yet experiencing everything around her more clearly. She achieved a sense of freedom, of not being bound by beliefs, convictions and expectations. Also, she describes a heightened sense of presence in the world. The author addresses a sense of `breaking the barriers of anxiety,' getting in touch with a deeper trust, beyond the `dust' of attachments and conditionings. She tells with great honesty about the obstacles she encountered during the project retreat: how the meditations sometimes led to doubts, frustrations, and how she dealt with them. Underlying the upheavals in her mind, as she notices, increasingly there was a gentle joy.
As a professional psychiatrist Adeline van Waning is able to clearly outline some differences and similarities between Western psychology and Buddhist psychology. In later chapters the book presents insights and experiences from the wisest of Tibetan masters, with views that offer concrete advice for Western readers. These presentations increase the accessibility of Buddhist meditation for the Western mind.
The book is a tour the force that explains many aspects of Buddhist meditation and the benefits of Shamatha for the mind, both in a theoretical and in a practical way. "The less dust, the more trust" can be helpful for anyone who practices a type of Buddhist meditation, and will appeal to the most critical and scientifically-minded readers.

This chronicles a three month Shamatha meditation retreat led by B. Alan Wallace where the participants were medically monitored 6 ways from Sunday, before during and after. I have listened to several podcasts of similar retreats held later in Phuket, Tailand, that lacked the scientific monitoring.
I am about 1/3 through this book. It contains sample guided meditations along with summary results of the scientific monitoring for the group. Alongside this are samples from the author's personal retreat diary. I appreciate the organization and cross references in this book. Dr van Waning is a practicing psychiatrist with Buddhist background and writes well.

It provides an insider’s view of the gratitude and life-changing shifts we research subjects enjoyed as we daily received impeccable, authentic teachings and then meditated for long hours in an idyllic setting high in the Rocky Mountains, all the while certain that we were simultaneously contributing to science, to Dharma, and to the cultivation of our own hearts and minds. Adeline’s intelligent and thoughtful psychological and philosophical contextualization of her personal experiences makes this book appealing to those interested in meditation, Dharma, contemplative neuroscience, and the many hybrid and integrative disciplines arising from them.

About the Author
Bob Katz played the B flat clarinet from the age of 10, and his lifelong love of sound and music led him to become a professional recording, mixing and mastering engineer (since 1971). Three of his recordings have garnered the GrammyT award and many others have been lauded in publications such as Stereo Review, Audio, and Stereophile. He has written over one hundred articles for audio and computer publications, and is an inventor and manufacturer with processors and support gear in use at mastering studios worldwide. His most recent patent-pending inventions, the K-Stereo and K-Surround Processors, fill a missing link in the mastering and post- production pantheon. He has been a workshops, facilities and section chairman of the AES and has given lectures in several countries. Currently, Bob runs Digital Domain Studios just north of Orlando, Florida.

Mostly for Mastering Engineers... but...

The discussion of how iTunes works and how to take advantage of its new High Resolution format is useful and eye-opening for any recording musician, whether pro or amateur. It'll give you ideas for maximizing the quality of your recording from beginning to end, it's filled with great colorful illustrations, and even though it's very technical, as a layman I understood the language throughout, thanks to some very well-presented glossaries.

If you are just a music listener curious about iTunes from a consumer perspective, skip this book. It is decidedly not for you.

Important information in a breezy read

The near-magical art of mastering audio goes back many decades. It's adapted time and time again, moving from the physical aspects of LP cutting through CD and now into the world of digital audio distribution. At every stage, the mastering engineer has done everything possible to match the music to the medium and ensure the most pleasant and true experience possible. While the hour it takes to read through this little volume won't make you into a mastering engineer, it will give the the beginnings of the toolset you want. More importantly, it may help to persuade you that it's a toolset you really need.

Those of us who've been in the business for a while are well aware of the so-called 'loudness wars'. It's the constant battle to make each musical release louder than the last, in the hopes it will rise to the top of the pile when it comes to airplay. It's been enormously damaging to the overall quality of recording. Bob Katz makes that point without preaching; more importantly he shows why it's a losing battle. More and more playback systems (and some legal restrictions) aim toward reproducing music with a uniform perceived loudness. Those pumped-up recording just get pushed down so they coexist nicely with the others. If that reduces those panicky lunges at my level control, then I'm all for it! A rather good portion of this brief book deals with the subject of loudness--really quite different from maximum level. Katz talks about how we perceive it and how playback systems can be tripped up by it. This is more than a minor issue. Even if your intent is to pump that volume, the actual act of coding and playing music may give you problems you never intended.

Although the book has iTunes as a prominent part of the title, I haven't even mentioned that until this point in the review. A great deal of what Katz has to say is of more general importance. But he gives you plenty to chew on for an iTunes-specific dinner. He talks about how iTunes fetches track names when you insert a CD, as well as how you can set that data up correctly. He discusses some free tools from Apple that can help you get the most out of encoding a song. He discusses some of his favorite tools--especially level meters. Throughout he maintains a lively and helpful tone, leaving you eager for more.

You'll Want To Read It Twice (At Least)

The book's title initially fooled me - I thought it might be nothing more than a glossy guide to "mastering" Apple's iTunes application.
I was wrong and the name Bob Katz should have tipped me off to the depth of technical detail and the passionate argument for quality audio that comes through every page.

"Mastering Music For iTunes" is not a tutorial on digital audio mastering (If you're interested, check out Katz's "Mastering Audio" text - it's one of the bibles of the industry). While mastering engineers will appreciate the technical depth, the book's audience is anyone in the music production chain from musician, mix and mastering engineers, producer and marketers with an interest in producing high quality digital audio.

With downloaded music now a dominant form of distribution and Apple's iTunes store a major point of sales, submitting the highest quality audio files to Apple under the guidelines of their Mastered for iTunes (MfiT) program requires some technical understanding. For many engineers, that means some changes to their traditional workflow of targeting CD and vinyl media. Traditional mastering tasks such as inserting pauses, balancing individual track loudness have changed, as has the very concept of an 'album' of assembled tracks. "The book's stated goal is not to make every reader an expert in audio encoding, loudness normalization, metadata, sample rate conversion and the benefits of preserving headroom, but rather to provide a working foundation enabling intelligent discussion and collaboration.

I'm an amateur musician with more experience in low-level software development than mastering audio but it fascinated me to see how the inherent lack of floating-point precision in microprocessor math operations I've been aware of for years has shaped and influenced software built on top of it, including digital recording and mastering tools. Subtle and counterintuitive artifacts and behaviors are often introduced (such as the substantial growth in audio file size as a result of effects processing - which is often nothing but an overlay of repeated floating point calculations). I found the comparison to digital photography effects such as dithering and pixelation spot on and it clarified a lot of the heavier detail, as did the many software screen shots of analyzed signals.

The book gives a good grounding in high-resolution audio, compression and limiting and their influence on loudness, and presents examples from a variety of software tools to give a sense of what's available to the contemporary engineer. None of the material is at the tutorial level and it's assumed that someone looking for technical depth already has a substantial background. The writing is lucid and lively and the pictorial layout of the book will make it a pleasure for non-technical readers with a serious interest in the topic.

If you've followed Bob Katz's writing and his blog you're familiar with his happy warrior stance in the "loudness wars". The tone of "Matering Music for iTunes" is upbeat; Katz feels that Apple's Mastering for iTunes program has provided him with ammunition and tools to support his case for preserving headroom and with it the spacious dynamics that are for him the hallmark of quality musical production. As someone from the same generation who shares much of his perspective, I hope he's right.

As a target reader I probably fall somewhere in between technical and non - I've recorded and mixed my own music in analog and digital for years but am self-taught and know merely the basics of mastering. Still, I found the book set off many ideas I want to explore and I imagine re-reading it and keeping it close to my studio desk for some time.

About the Author
William Thomas Allison is Professor of History Georgia Southern University. He earned his Ph.D. in history at Bowling Green State University in 1995, and has taught as Visiting Professor at the Air War College and the School for Advanced Air and Space Studies.  He is author of Military Justice in Vietnam: The Rule of Law in an American War (Kansas, 2007), The Tet Offensive (Routledge, 2008), My Lai: An American Tragedy (Johns Hopkins, 2012), and The Gulf War, 1991 (Palgrave, 2012), among other works. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Military History and as a member of the Department of the Army Historical Advisory Committee.
 
Jeffrey G. Grey is Professor of History in the School for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Australian Defence Force Academy. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of New South Wales in 1986, and has held several professorships, including the Major General Matthew C. Horner Chair of Military Theory at the United States Marine Corps University. His numerous publications include The Commonwealth Armies and the Korean War: An Alliance Study (Manchester, 1988),  A Military History of Australia (Cambridge, 1990), Australian Brass: The Career of Lieutenant General Sir Horace Robertson (Cambridge University Press, 1992), 'Up Top': The Royal Australian Navy in Southeast Asian Conflicts 1955-1972 (Allen & Unwin, 1998), The Australian Army: Volume I: The Australian Centenary History of Defence (Oxford, 2006), as well as several authored and co-authored volumes on Australian military history for the Australian Army History Unit and Australian Military History Publishing. He has served as a trustee for the Society for Military History and on the editorial boards of the Journal of the Australian War Memorial, Journal of Military History, Scientia Militaria, War in History, and Australian Army Journal, and is editor for the journal War and Society.
 
Janet G. Valentine is Assistant Professor in the Department of Military History at the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Alabama in 2002 and has worked as a historian for the United States Army Center of Military History, the Air National Guard History Office, and the Joint History Office. She has served on the advisory board for H-WAR and the editorial board of the Journal of Military History. She taught at the University of North Florida and Mississippi State University. Her current research focuses on the Korean War, and citizenship and military obligation.

Good enough to be used as a textbook, which it is

Had to get this book for an American Military History class. With all required textbooks, I was expecting your every day run of the mill regurgitated info, but this book proved all those notions wrong and is a pleasant read. There are lots of facts and history that are relatively obscure and the book goes back to the early 1600's. A very worthy book for people with a serious interest in American Military History.

It's a Textbook

For American Military History. No surprises there.

HOWEVER, be aware Kindle Fire users, that every page on this book will have to be resized so you can read the text. And if you load it on your Fire and then on a desktop so you can read it, that's as many devices as you can put it on. If you want to put it on a tablet so you can read it, you will have to uninstall it from one of the other devices and DEREGISTER the device. What that means is your Kindle (or any other device) won't be recognized as yours anymore by Amazon. It's not good enough for the publisher that you've removed it; you have to divorce your device from your account.

Not a happy college student. I will recommend that the instructor find a different book for his future classes.

Good book, tough to read.

I'm reading "American Military History" for a military history class. I do enjoy the book. It's a good survey of American military history. Accessing the book has been a real headache. I'm running Windows 8 and this book is not available on Kindle for Windows 8. Kindle for PC is unstable on Windows 8, and it keeps crashing, even in various compatibility modes. I am reading it on my Kindle Fire 8.9. It works fine on my kindle, but would be much easier to read on my laptop.

Since that first sale, Jackson has written enough novels to fill a bookcase. Texas is the setting for UNSPOKEN, her November 1999 novel for Zebra Books. UNSPOKEN is the climax of Zebra's four-month Lisa Jackson promotion of four re-releases and one original title. You will be hooked from the first page....

Shelby Cole has returned to Bad Luck, Texas after being gone nearly ten years. When she was told by her father that her daughter died, she left with no intention of ever returning. Then she received an anonymous package with pictures of the daughter that she thought died. Knowing that she'd do anything to get her daughter back, Shelby returns to Bad Luck. Once there, she asks Nevada Smith for help, her one time love and the father of her baby. Although she swore that she would never fall in love with Nevada again, she knew that she couldn't stop it.
Nevada Smith was always labeled a "no good half breed" by the citizens of Bad Luck. He couldn't stay away from Shelby Cole ten years before, and he knew that he wouldn't be able to stay away now. Even though she was the pampered daughter of Judge Red Cole, something about her drew him. When he's hit with the information that he was a father and never knew it, Nevada vows that he will do anything he can to find their daughter.

AWFUL rehashed story from the 90's

I usually like this author, and picked this up from the new paperback section before my flight. As I began the book I was absolutely dumbfounded at the amateur writing style and Harlequin romance dialogue of the book! I began to skip entire pages, determined to find the Lisa Jackson I was used to. It NEVER happened! And then.... at the end of the book was a note from the author about how much fun she had re-visiting these characters from the book and "tweaking" it to be more modern. Turns out this is one of her earlier works from the early 1990's and it is absolutely positively not worth one penny. I felt hoodwinked by the fact they marketed it in the new section. Do not waste your money. Painful. And frustrating as I had only grabbed this one book because I had read everything on my kindle so needed a book for a two hour flight! I am sorry to say I read the whole thing all the way through. They should tell you if the book is an old re-worked story!!!!

This book is a mystery and romance all in one.

Unspoken by Lisa Jackson is a thoroughly enjoyable book. Not only is it a romance story but it is an action-packed mystery adventure as well. "Bad-boy" hero Nevada Smith is a handsome rebel and his relationship with spirited Shelby Cole is full of excitement. Lisa Jackson does a great job capturing the feel of small town Texas and everyone from the overweight sheriff to the gossipy cafe waitress are genuinely portrayed and add to the flavor of the book. There is never a dull moment in Bad Luck, Texas once Shelby and Nevada get together and the plot's twists and turns keep the reader guessing up until the end.
