This Artistic/Community Approach May Be What You Are Looking For

Depending upon how you view home brewing (or life), this may or may not be the book you have been looking for. Randy Mosher believes one should brew (and live) in a way that builds community and allows for individual expression. In contrast, Papazian's "Joy" focuses on having fun. Palmer's "How to Brew" focused on measuring everything, from water chemistry to fluid dynamics. But I read Mosher's books primarily for his exhortations to honor the history and culture of brewing, to be in touch with the community and culture in which you live, and to use brewing as a mode of personal, artistic expression. You will find all that here.

Mosher's book is beautiful to look at. And it covers the landscape quite well, from ingredients, to recipe formulation to yeast management to considerations in building your brewery.

If you don't intend to measure your beer, you might go with Papazian instead. If you think you will find Mosher's exhortations a distraction, stick with Palmer for his practical advice. But even if Mosher hadn't given me anything practical to think about (and he did), I would buy this for the attractiveness of the book and for his reminders that caring about beer gives us another way to care about one another.

The BEST home brewing book EVER.

First, let me start by saying that I have read many home brewing books.
There are some basic texts - like "How to Brew" by John Palmer and "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Papazian.

Then there are many highly specialized books - such as Malt, Yeast, Water, Hops series, or Radical Homebrewing (by Mosher and Jackson) and Experimental Homebrewing by Beechum and Conn and every book by Hironimous (on Hops, on Belgian Monk style beers, on American beers and on Wheat beers) - specific books on sour beers (Tonsmeire), wild brews (Sparrow), vintage beer, IPAs, etc.

There are recipe books like 80 recipes by Zainasheff and Palmer, Homebrew All-stars by Beechum and Conn, there are historical books - a million on craft beer - like history of Achor Steam and Sierra Nevada, but also on IPA history by Steele, and Stouts/Porters by someone I can't recall right now, etc.

There are books with more academic/scientifc explanations like the ones by Bamforth. There are books on how to taste beers, how to pair them with food, etc.

I own and read all of the books above.

If I had to limit myself to just one reference book - or recommend just a single book to a brewer - a newcomer, or even someone who has brewing for a year or a few years, I would recommend Randy Mosher's "Mastering Homebrew".

As a somewhat advanced home brewer with scientific background, I am no longer satisfied by simple instructional books that tell you what to do but do not explain the reasons for doing so. Mosher goes out of his way to explain you the *reasons* you need to take specific steps in your brewing process, not shying from some basic science behind it. This means you are not just following some instructions or recipe design that someone else put together for you, but the book encourages and gives you the skills to become knowledgeable enough to develop your own ideas and your own recipes, your own techniques etc. The books is much more open-minded and is designed to develop, teach and cultivate the best home brewer inside of you. Yes, there are technical skills and details you need to learn but the book focuses on the big picture - like understanding what each component of recipe does for the final product. This is done here much better than any other book I have seen.

And even technical details are highly relevant - for example, description of kegging is something that I suspect majority of modern home brewers do - yet very few (almost none!) books describe it at all. This book does it in great detail, as well as bottling, beer transfer and aging, primary vs. secondary, hop styles and utilization, yeast types and propagation, mash procedures, malting process, unusual ingredients etc. All of it is done with common illustration - there is a figure or a chart or a photo or a schematic or a table for almost every other page of the book, and this really helps to understand and adsorb a lot of material in a fairly short period of time. It also makes for a great reference book down the road!

Perhaps it's my scientific approach, but the diagrams, plots and charts are extremely useful in understanding some of the complexities involved in issues such as variety of hops or malt, flavor/bitterness/aroma, or even basic history of ale, lagers and craft brewing.

The book does an excellent job at covering essentially ALL of the beer styles I can think of (and many I don't think much about) in a way that clearly spells out the differences, without making it seem like a rigid orthodoxy - in fact it keeps encouraging readers to experiment and come up with new unexpected styles or ingredients, throughout the book.

The recipe part of the book is the highlight, in my opinion, as it teaches not just WHAT to put in a recipe, but also WHY you are putting each ingredient with ultimate goal of developing independently thinking brewers who are not afraid to modify existing recipes and come up with their own. This is done in a fashion unlike any book I have ever read before.

But another major highlight especially for beginning and intermediate brewer is the "troubleshooting" section which summarizes and identifies major problems with home-brew outcomes and suggests the symptomatic issues that are likely the cause of the problem.

If you ever watched any of the interviews with Randy Mosher (especially from BeerSmith podcast) it is clear he really really know what he is talking about, and it comes from decades of passionate research -whether he is talking about neuro-gastronomy of aroma perception in beer, or physics of carbonation or chemistry of mashing and malting, or false historic myths about IPAs and belgian beers - Randy seems to know it all, and know it well.

This book is highly recommended, I believe it will surpass any other home-brew book and quickly become THE BIBLE of home brewers.

This book is a great first read for beginner home brewers but at the same time could be an extremely useful reference for intermediate and even advanced brewers who have dozens of batches under their belt. Highly recommended

Somehow dissapointing

I'm an avid homebrewer producing good beer already and with a bunch of medals won in different competitions. The book has been kind of a disappointment. It's not well structured and, although easy to navigate and read, it's not "readable" in the sense of "from beginning to end" readable. Looks more like a bunch of articles written separately that are simply copied and pasted into a book, and although some of the information is good, I do not see it as a good book.

For the novice brewer I would rather recommend Palmer's How to Brew and Papazian's The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, this one a distant third. For the advanced brewer it has some good information, but nothing you cannot find on the web if you know where to get your information and how to filter the "noise".

I'm giving it 3 stars, but I was hoping for a solid 5!

Rothschilds Lite

There are very few families in history that have managed to maintain a tradition of excellence over several generations -- "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" is the rule. The two notable exceptions to the rule are the Medici and the Rothschilds.

I purchased this book thinking that the author would provide some insight into how the Rothschilds achieved their long-standing record of success. Unfortunately, Mr. Morton is merely a sycophant, apparently incapable of providing the kind of detailed analysis the question calls for. Instead, he constantly marvels at how this family of rag merchants from Jew Street in Frankfurt ended up hobnobbing with the crowned heads of Europe. That is certainly an accomplishment of sorts, but absent any kind of descriptive analysis, it is little more than fodder for People magazine. Indeed, one can argue that the recent decline in the family's fortunes is due to their emulation of European aristocracy.

A far better book on the same topic is the two-volume set, "The House of Rothschild: Volume 1: Money's Prophets: 1798-1848 and The House of Rothschild: Volume 2: The World's Banker: 1849-1999. After reading Mr. Morton, it is both refreshing and illuminating.

Rothschild family bio

Recognizing that this title is now 50 years old, it provided what I sought; a general historical biography of the Rothschild family, especially the origins of the family wealth and how the various branches of the family are related and, as of 1961, the status of each family branch. The author acknowledges he is a novelist and not an historian, so the book should not be looked upon as an academically rigorous dissertation, nor does the author claim complete impartiality. The family gave him largely unfettered access to family archives and considerable personal time for interviews. He is appreciative for the access, and not prone to criticize. Moral, ethical judgements about the family's activities are largely left for the reader to make.

Confusing Narrative and a Shame

Buried in this detailed narrative are colorful and interesting phrases like "In one day, he reduced the bank's gold reserves by almost 100,000 pounds." This deals with an enraged Nathan Rothschild almost sinking the Bank of England by cashing hundreds of small notes, because the bank would not cash his notes which would be, uh checks. Ok, confused? The whole book is like this. Dramatic stories covering Mayer Rothschild from a German Jewish ghetto creating success and amazing good fortune. Sons and strong family power continue the legacy-financing princes during war, to controlling Brazil. Accounts describing Napoleon to Hitler.
Counting houses and branches in England, Germany and throughout Europe. You want to read these stories but the script is flawed OR at the extreme height of high intellect. I think the former. I am employed in finance and banking-and I cannot follow the threads!
And yet there are descripive, powerful passages that keep you turning the pages. The fact that the House of Rothschild is credited to Mayer having sons, as Morton starts off, is a telling statment but he buries you in all these individual accounts as decades roll by and the dynasty becomes mythic. The pictorial section is wonderful and perhaps paints a clearer picture than the text of a book, whose paperback cover claims to be a "Number One Best Seller."

He compares approaches from economics and anthropology, showing the strengths and limitations of each. We need more of these kinds of books that put aside disciplinary narcissism to show what different kinds of research contribute to knowledge production.

About the Author
Steven C. Frautschi joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1962 and became professor emeritus in 2006. His publication list includes 80 research papers on the theory of high energy physics, and the book 'Regge Poles and S- Matrix Theory'. He has served as Master of Student Houses and has won three student teaching awards.

Richard P. Olenick is currently the chair of Department of Physics at University of Dallas. He was Associate Project Director of the PBS Series The Mechanical Universe and Beyond the Mechanical Universe, which accompanied this textbook and its successors. He has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education for his work in physics education. His current project is C3P, which developed an inquiry-based curriculum for high school physics. In 1995, Dr Olenick was named Texas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and in 1997, he was named a Minnie Piper Steven Professor. In 2003, he became the Nancy Cain Marcus and Jeffrey A. Marcus Chair in Science and in 2005 he received the King Award from the University of Dallas, which is the highest honor the University can bestow on a faculty member.

Tom M. Apostol joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1950 and is now Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. He is internationally known for his textbooks on Calculus, Analysis, and Analytic Number Theory, which have been translated into 5 languages, and for creating Project MATHEMATICS!, a series of video programs that bring mathematics to life with computer animation, live action, music, and special effects. The videos have won first-place honors at a dozen international video festivals, and have been translated into Hebrew, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. His list of publications includes 98 research papers, 46 of them published since he retired in 1992. He has received several awards for his research and teaching. In 1978 he was a visiting professor at the University of Patras in Greece, and in 2000 was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens, where he delivered his inaugural lecture in Greek.

Dr. David L. Goodstein is Vice Provost and Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty for over 35 years. In 1995, he was named the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor. In 1999, Dr Goodstein was awarded the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers, and in 2000, the John P. McGovern Medal of the Sigma Xi Society. He has served on and chaired numerous scientific and academic panels, including the National Advisory Committee to the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the California Council on Science and Technology. His books include States of Matter and Feynman's Lost Lecture, written with his wife, Dr. Judith Goodstein. In the 1980s, he was Director and host of The Mechanical Universe television program.

An clear presentation of mechanics

I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I've just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.

A Marvelous and Timeless Intro to Physics (and Calculus)

This book may be older than my college-age daughter, but it's still one of the best introductions to elementary physics that you'll find anywhere. Marvelously readable, the authors do a wonderful job of interweaving historical context for the development of the ideas with lucid explanations of the modern understanding.

Be aware that calculus is sprinkled liberally throughout. Fortunately, the authors introduce and explain the calculus they use, and they do it in a way that is not only easy and painless; you actually begin to see why modern physics would not be possible without calculus.

With its highly readable explanations and historical perpective, this book might make a good back-up text for a college student taking Intro Physics. It's also suitable as the backbone of an advanced high school course where the instructor desires to incorporate calculus. In fact, there was a TV series that closely follows the text, minus the calculus, and is targeted at high school students. You can still find it on DVD and VHS (although not from Amazon) but you'll pay $450 to $500 for all 26 (maybe 28?) hours.

Finally, it's perfect if you (like me) went to school too many years ago and would just like to refresh your knowledge of the subject. I know a lot of amateur astronomers who fit in that category! As a bonus, you get a refresher course in calculus along the way.

Note that there is a second volume that dives into electromagnetism as well as quantum mechanics at the same introductory level. There is also an "advanced" version of this book that I have not looked at. Judging from the table of contents, however, it appears to be the same basic material slightly re-organized.

Great book about good and bad bosses

Bob Sutton's latest book is a great read, and is filled with vivid examples of leaders who do things right, or wrong. Sutton is a talented story teller, and brings bosses to life in his descriptions of real life executives and managers, and also draws on his deep knowledge of psychology to explain, in clear terms, why the actions of bosses are so impactful, for better or for worse, on the people who work for them. This book does what so few management and leadership books are able to- it balances "showing" through real world stories with "telling" through established theories of social psychology. Anyone who has a boss, or is a boss, will benefit from reading this book.

Great Leadership Book

Good Boss Bad Boss is a great book on leadership.

I have read almost all of Professor Sutton's books and I find his ability to find real world examples of just about any leadership style or challenge amazing. This book is no exception. Sutton talks about the leadership theory, but balances it with his shrewd and pragmatic lens on the real world. Sutton calls it like he sees it-no apologies. I enjoy the mixture of theory and reality. Sutton sees leadership as a craft; something personal.

This book is filled with great real world examples of leadership in many styles. I found it thought provoking, as I was able to think about how any one of these styles might suit me or my organization.

Magnets and septic tanks

However defined, a "boss" by nature is given or somehow obtains at least some degree of control of and - yes - responsibility for others, for better or worse. Its connotations have become so diverse that the term's meaning is almost entirely determined by the person who invokes it. The inmates of a prison, for example, do not have the same meaning in mind when referring to a guard they fear as do fans of Bruce Springsteen when describing someone they revere. In the business world, however, everyone agrees that having a "good boss" is highly preferable to having a "bad boss." Now and for the first time insofar as I know, Robert Sutton has written a book in which all of the attention is devoted to a rigorous examination of these two types.

Having read and then reviewed most of Sutton's previous books, I was not surprised to find so much valuable material (i.e. information and especially counsel) in his latest book. He also includes contributions from a diverse group of people who share their own experiences, opinions and suggestions. They include Michael McCain ("A Recipe for an Effective Apology," Pages 64-65), Margie Mauldin (the "Tape Method" to manage anger, Pages 92-93), Matthew May (a "dirty trick" to demonstrate how an organizational hierarchy can enable bad decisions, Pages 131-132), Bonny Warner-Simi (how to support and protect direct-reports by improving their performance evaluation process, Pages 165-166), and Paul Levy (how to support and protect those whom Jody Heymann characterizes - in Profit at the Bottom of the Ladder: Creating Value by Investing in Your Workforce -- as "the least-advantaged employees," Pages 195-196).

These and other contributions supplement those that Sutton includes as he delivers what the book's subtitle promises: an explanation of how to be the best (or at least a much better) boss by learning from real-world bosses who lack character and/or competence. "I use the word `boss' rather than `leader,' `manager,' or `supervisor' (although all are bosses) because it implies an authority figure that has direct and frequent contact with subordinates - and who is responsible for personally directing and evaluating their work." This book focuses on the differences between the best and worst bosses "when performing essential chores like taking charge, making wise decisions, turning talk into action, and doing their dirty work (i.e. work that is unpleasant but necessary but illegal, immoral, or unethical).

Sutton duly acknowledges that many of the ideas in this book are shaped by two books he co-authored with Jeffrey Pfeffer, The Knowing-Doing Gap and, more recently, Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense. (Note: I highly recommend those as well as Pfeffer's latest book, Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't.) Readers will especially appreciate how Sutton presents his material. He makes skillful use of bold face, italics, brackets, and bullet points as well as sequences of separate but related ideas. For example:

"What the Best Bosses Do": Seven attributes (Pages 47-64)
"Tricks for Taking Charge": He identifies nine (Pages 68-70)
"The Attitude of Wisdom": Smart Bosses and Wise Bosses (Page 73)
"Participation Traps": He identifies and discusses three (Pages 88-91)
"Other Smart People's Tricks": He identifies nine (Pages 113-122)

As is also true in all of his previously published books and articles, Sutton identifies the "what" and explains the "why" of a good or bad business decision or initiative, then focuses most of his attention on how to do what must be done while avoiding (or repairing) the damage of what should not be done. Congratulations to Robert Sutton on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!
