This book by Melissa Pflug is an excellent investigation of Odawa culture done before the 2005 establishment of the sovereign nation for the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Dr. Pflug is an original researcher and informed writer.

In the early 1800s John Bell moved his family from North Carolina to the rich bottom lands along the Red River in Robertson County, Tennessee. Bell, an elder in the Red River Baptist Church, was well-liked and respected by most in the community and prospered as a farmer. As Bell worked hard to raise his family and to carve out a living, the unusual, unexpected, and terrifying happened. Between 1817 and 1821 the Bell family were allegedly tormented day and night by some heinous menacing spirit called a “witch” known as “Kate.” Kate’s remonstrations and activities were witnessed by many in the community. The events eventually led to the death of John Bell, and he is the only person whose demise is attributed to the work of a spirit. Written only seventy-three years after the awful events transpired, this is the story of the Bell Witch. This is the eyewiteness account by a member of the Bell family.

Our Family Trouble The Story of the Bell Witch of Tennessee by Richard Williams Bell

This account has the distinction of being composed by someone who actually lived through the Bell Witch incident of 1817-1820. Richard Williams Bell was one of the younger sons of Old Jack Bell.

Mr. Bell walks the reader through the coming of the spirit, giving the story as he remembers it, collaborated by conversations with his brothers and sister who also lived through the alleged haunting.

He next goes into the visits of witch-finders, a series of tricks by the “witch” in revealing her identity, and exactly when the spirit became known as Old Kate, identifying itself with Kate Batts, a local woman who lost on a land deal with John Bell.
Now he guides the reader through the various afflictions suffered by his father and sister Betsy. The two were both harassed by the alleged witch, but John (Old Jack) Bell was finally harassed to his death. Eventually the “spirit” left only to return after seven years as predicted.

Williams Bell tells of the “witch’s” dislike for slaves, and that it could tell even when one was slipped into the house in secret and then hidden under a bed. He speaks of how his brother Joel was beaten by the poltergeist, and how various people tried to either remove the witch or actually kill it without success.

He tells the reader of his mother’s illness, the witch’s concern for Lucy Bell, and the miraculous delivery of hazelnuts and grapes.

Finally he tells the story of his father’s death, alleged slain by the witch. The mysterious vial of foul smelling medicine is described along the with the changing of the color of the fireplace flames when the vial was thrown into it.

Finally, he describes the return after seven years.

Some of the legends of the Bell Witch are noticeably missing from this account. I can only point out that Richard Williams Bell lived in the haunted house, and that it was his father and sister who were tormented. Thus, he should know best.

Authentic Bizarre Americana

The Bell Witch was so thoroughly documented by such a wide array of witnesses , including Andrew Jackson , that it can't be dismissed as a hoax . It is still unexplained as to just exactly what the " witch " was but it was not a witch in the terms that people today would use . The " witch " , in my opinion was probably a poltergeist . There is no extraneous guesses by the author , Mr . Bell , just the facts that he lived through with his family . Perhaps not the best written be certainly the most honest account of the Bell Witch .

Apparently this is the UK edition. Apparently someone search-and-replaced all the American spellings with UK spellings. Unfortunately, this did not work out that well.
