A Wonderful Collection of Sermons

This is a fantastic book of sermons written by John Webster, professor of divinity at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. There are 26 sermons grouped together under 5 headings: gravity and grace, the suffering servant, hearing God, living by promises, and pressing on. Each chapter is an edited sermon that's short, but spiritually powerful. Webster writes, "Preaching is one of the principal ways in which the God of the gospel has dealings with us. The gospel's God is eloquent: he does not remained locked in silence, but speaks." Through these sermons, Webster presents the God who speaks in an eloquent manner. You'll find yourself stopping as you read to pray and meditate. Keep a pen handy, as you'll want to underline a sentence or two in each sermon that will speak to you. I asked for this book for Christmas and have been reading a sermon a night before bed. The Lord has used these sermons to warm my heart toward him and his word. Very accessible for devotions.

It would have been better, I think

Early on in the book, the author admits that historically, there's not much "there" there regarding paganism; it's an essentially negative concept which defines something as being non-Christian (and was sometimes seriously applied to kinds of Christianity considered by the historical writer to be heterodox). The religions identified as paganism in antiquity and after it were not all polytheistic, nor indigenous, nor pre-Christian.

So, since there's very little real common ground among the 'pagan' religions, the author says that his book is a history of the 'concept' of paganism down the centuries. And while there is some interesting material on the evolution of the term and its applications near the beginning and especially in the last two chapters of the book, the middle chapters drag, and consist largely of a chronicle of who converted to Christianity when. I think the book suffers from this. It would have been better, I think, to omit most of the historical material and focus on the way the concept was formed in antiquity, and how it was appropriated by those who began to self-identify as pagans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (the final two chapters, which I have already mentioned, treat this topic and are by far the most interesting part of the book).

The best very short introductions bring a period of hisory to life or teach you new perspectives. This one is more of a list of facts and dates, and the main takeaway is that we know very little about indigenous religions. It lacks the passion and punch that other books on the series have.

The first 2/3rds could be titled: "the christianization process: a very short introduction." It is a general summary of the spread of the christian faith and how christians viewed with and interacted with the religions they encountered. It's filled with generalizations and isn't very interesting.

While the first 2/3rds of the book are pretty ho-hum, the final third about the interest in modern paganism from the late 19th century onwards does get interesting. If this in particular is what interests you, then I would recommend getting this book from a library and starting around chapter 5.

Author Biographies: Michael F Pavkovic is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Diplomacy and Military Studies Programs at Hawaii Pacific University. Rob S. Rice is a Professor at the American Military University. Frederick C. Schneid is a Professor of History at High Point University in North Carolina. Chris L. Scott was Head of Education for The Royal Armouries. He has edited the magazine Battlefield, and co-founded The Guild of Battlefield Guides.

About the Author

Michael F. Pavkovic is Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He is the co-author of What is Military History? and has published on a variety of subjects in military history.

Rob S. Rice is a Professor at the American Military University, teaching courses on Ancient and Modern Naval Warfare. He has published articles in the Oxford Companion to American Military History and The Reader's Guide to Military History, and contributed to Fighting Techniques of the Ancient World.

Frederick C. Schneid is a Professor of History at High Point University in North Carolina. He has written several books on European warfare and is Southern Regional Director of the Society for Military History.

Chris L. Scott was Head of Education for the Royal Armouries. He is a member of the Royal Historical Society and the Guild of Battlefield Guides, and has lectured for the British Commission for Military History and the Battlefields Trust. He has written several books on military history, edited the magazine Battlefield, and co-founded The Guild of Battlefield Guides.

Good read, little lacking in detail

I sought this book as an introduction to the fighting techniques of the Napoleonic era, and was reasonably satisfied. For serious study, however, it is lacking. I am left with quite a few more questions than answers after reading this book. There are several excellent anecdotes concerning the historic personages of the era, but unfortunately the real "meat" of the subject is sadly missing. The battle descriptions are average and the maps downright confusing (they mix colors from battle to battle). The battles are meant as illustrations of the techniques described in the chapters, but they come off as loosely related and do not adequately convey the intended lesson. Perhaps I was searching for something a bit more scholarly.

Interesting introduction to the warfare of the period

I have read critiques about the books in this collection being too shallow, but I find it interesting. Of course, I would like to know more about the subject, but this is a quite good introduction for a period of warfare of which I knew practically nothing. I plan to get all the titles in the series.

good entry level read

I have recently bought this book along with a couple of Osprey on British and French infantry tactics during Napoleonic wars.

Put it very briefly, get this book instead of the Ospreys. It covers not only infantry, cavalry, artillery but also naval warfare. The book gives numerous lively examples and accounts about the different achievements of each arm. One can find numerous battles explained with maps, each detailing the successes of a particular use of cavalry, artillery or infantry.

This little book does extremely well in its own modest and pedagogical way what others more convoluted writings fail to achieve: inspire!

As a conclusion: a well written and engaging entry level book. Happy with it and will read it again with pleasure.

NOT HELPFULL FROM A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE

This book is so poorly written that if the professor relies solely on the book, the student will have no clue what on earth is going on, this is what I am experiencing now. The author could have done a better job dumbing it down so that a layman could understand it. One would need an intro class for this book alone before he/she would actually be able to understand some of the theories, due mainly to authors pretentiousness.

While the reading can be a little bit dry (I recommend some cheese and wine as well as some paper for taking notes to help it go down), this thin volume is a fine outline of an alchemical perspective on the mysteries of life.

I would recommend this piece to someone who is interested in the meaning of life, different anthropological perspectives, and has some familiarity with common occult symbolism, or is willing to look things up constantly.

This is how the BEST survive

Jim Blount might very well be one of the most qualified individuals on the planet to speak on the topic of counterterrorism. He was working in the counterterrorism community at least a decade BEFORE 9/11. He is not just the expert, but he's the expert that TEACHES the experts. All of the instruction given in this book was not only taught to CT operatives but has been utilized and found to be effective in protecting the most elite teams in dangerous environments around the globe. But don't make the mistake of thinking that this is information which is only for those traveling in the world's hotspots; this book contains critical information which can be and should be utilized by everyday folks during everyday life. Being prepared for the unexpected by recognizing a threat and having a plan (a smart, effective one taught by an expert) might be the difference between being a survivor or being a statistic.

This book could also be very useful to "preppers" or folks with the survivalist mindset and contains advice that is seldom seen in other books catering to those concerns. For instance, there is good practical advice on defensive driving tactics or surveillance and counter surveillance tactics.

I highly recommend this book as a foundation to begin living a life that will keep you and your loved ones more prepared, more aware, and safer whether at home or abroad.

An Incredible Book - an Incredible Wealth of Information! A must read by every American!

Jim Blount's latest book Stay Alert-Stay Alive, a Guide to Counterterrorism for Everyday Life, is a very informative, compelling, comprehensive and fascinating narrative. Mr. Blount has trained many 1000s of people throughout his long impressive career, who work and live in dangerous places and as a result he has helped to save countless lives. Mr. Blount draws from his extrordinary career as a CIA operative and delivers great advice on how to recognize a terrorist or criminal act before it occurs and how to respond and survive.
I have served over 35 years in the military and government in the counterterroism community. I read everything I can get my hands on and can definitively state that there is absolutely nothing else on the market that comes close to Stay Alert-Stay Alive!
This book should be read by every American! We do not live in a safe world and it is naive to think that the information contained in Stay Alert-Stay Alive is anything but absolutely essential information. You owe it to yourself, your family and your co-workers to learn from Mr Blount's lessons contained in Stay Alert-Stay Alive.

Built as both encyclopedia and survival manual, the author tracks the history and weapons used in terrorist attacks and provides easily-understood rules for avoiding violent confrontations. A must-read for anyone working in the first-responder industry as well as those traveling abroad.

This book changed my life when I was 20, over 30 years ago. It is worth reading. Back then, some of these ideas were "radical". They may seem less so now, but nonetheless, it is good to know where you come from.

Dated but with a Place in History

When first printed in 1974, this would have been a ground-breaking read for women of faith, introducing the concept of options for women's lives inside and/or outside the home. Today, though, it is quite dated and worth the read mainly as a snapshot of Christian feminist history. Two of the fifteen chapters are notable exceptions: one about women in several of the pagan Biblical nations, each discussed individually; and the second about wasting the church's gifts. Especially the former, coupled with the book's place in history, makes this book a good addition to any Christian feminist collection.
