5 STARS JUST DOESNT DO THIS BOOK JUSTICE!!!

If you are familiar with Annabel Joseph's work, then you already know she is a top notch author. She has published a multitude of best-selling BDSM books over the past several years, even before the FSoG craze. Having read practically her entire catalog, her writing helped pave the way for my love of erotica today, and she is, without a doubt, one of my all time favorite erotic authors. Amazingly, after so many incredible books under her belt, she is still at it... and dare I say, better than ever!

To be fair, I am a BDSM and dark erotica junkie. But Ms. Joseph's recently past foray into historical erotica only proved that her writing abilities have no bounds. Although not a huge fan of that specific genre, her talents even sucked me into those.

However, I was hoping to see some more "old school" Annabel Joseph...Contemporary BDSM with various levels of darkness thrown in. What I received in Torment Me exceeded anything I had hoped for, a Dark/BDSM masterpiece. My two favorite sub genres woven together into what I can only call a unique, awesome, and fantastically written story.

In this book, we meet Chere, a lovable but somewhat clueless, high class prostitute, and W my new favorite sadist that I love to hate. Told through the intense meetings of the two, this is a story that is edgy, gritty, and raw. Torment Me is a roller coaster of emotion, a tale so twisted and complicated, I actually found myself holding my breath at times. This novel is dubious consent at its very best!

Thank you book gods! There is more to this story. This book doesn't end in what I would call a cliffhanger. ( Thank you Annabel !). But, we have a continuation to look forward to in the near future (Thanks, again!). I read this in one sitting, yet I pre-ordered the next installment in the Rough Love series, Taunt Me, during a quick coffee break while at 40%. It was a "no brainer" for me, just as I had preordered this book, and was reading as soon as it appeared on my Kindle.

Worth the Wait

I've been in a reading slump lately, with nothing really holding my interest. Because Annabel Joseph's "meaner" heroes are my favourites - "Mercy" makes me wince but it's probably my favourite AJ book - I've really been looking forward to "Torment Me" and bought it as soon as it came out. Verdict? Reading slump over.

This book was impossible to put down. I truly liked the heroine, Chere, which is rare for me, since I usually find heroines to be kind of bland carbon copies of one another. But Chere was funny and smart, and she bluntly acknowledged the twisted nature of the "romantic" dynamic, even if it was seriously messed up. (Best exchange: "That blindfold was a kindness, by the way. You would have been more scared without it, because you would have seen what was in my eyes." "Murder," I said. hahaha!) There were never any apologies or justifications made for why Chere chose to be an escort or why W was a sadist. They just were. No lectures on why it's not "bad" to be either of these things, just a story that showed us two people who lived this lifestyle and let us determine for ourselves whether or not we had a problem with it.

The story starts fast and moves fast, and the mystery of who W is, what he looks like, his name, his career - some of which is answered and some of which is not, I won't spoil it here - kept me turning the pages, as curious as Chere to know more about this man. The scene where she finally sees his face truly had me clutching my e-reader, mind racing as I tried to figure out if I should be horrified or thrilled or devastated. Because Chere was smart, she asked herself the same questions I would ask, had the same doubts I would have had (y'know, if I were a professional escort). Because these things were addressed and not glossed over, I never felt like I was being cheated or like anything was "obvious." I was worried initially that the mystery of W would be a cop out, like he was secretly her friend or neighbour or boyfriend or something, and it was an enormous relief that it was none of that. He's a straight up sadistic, handsome mystery.

The sex is plentiful, and rough, as we've all been warned. I actually didn't think this book was nearly as mean as "Mercy," with the exception of the choking. It says so much about Ms. Joseph's writing that even though I cringe through a lot of the pain-inducing parts, I never completely close my eyes, unwilling to miss a single depraved word. And whenever I checked the page count, I was sad to see the pages dwindling, and have already started my countdown for the next book.

So why not five stars? Nothing major. I feel like the sex scenes are the real story, and because they started so intensely, their progression is a bit limited. I feel like the crazy intensity of those scenes peaked when Chere first saw W's face. It was always interesting to read, but I felt like the stakes weren't raised after that point, and I'm not sure how Ms. Joseph will be able to address this in two additional books. (Which I am absolutely going to be reading the second they're released.) Also, because W's such a mystery, I don't know why he likes Chere so much. I know *I* like her, but why does he? Because he "likes" her a lot (in his own brutal way), right from the beginning. That's part of why I thought he must know her. Maybe that will be revealed in later books, but I don't think so. I think he requested an escort and really liked the one he got, and though he explains why he likes tormenting her, I still wanted to know more.

Even though I knew this was the first in a three-part series, I felt let down by the ending. I knew where it was going so it didn't come as a surprise, and I just kind of sighed. It was like a balloon being deflated instead of bursting - I wanted the ending to shock me as much as the rest of the story.

If you like Ms. Joseph's other work, "Torment Me" is well worth picking up. The lovely writing juxtaposed with the harsh sex is a trademark of her storytelling, and she's the only rough sex/BDSM writer I read, because it always feels real and raw and honest, qualities I admire even if the story sometimes makes me flinch.

Final nitpicky note: when talking about paper products, it's stationery, not stationary. Will someone please address this in the next book.

Annabel Joseph never fails to deliver a mind blowing read and Torment Me part one in this series totally blew me away.

Chere aka Miss Kitty is a high class escort thinking she had gone up in the world from club stripper. She played the part of Pink pretty Miss Kitty and was not ready for the rough love from the mysteries 'W'.

The story develops and opens here's eyes to what a mess her current life is, she is an abusive relationship with her drugged up and failing artist boyfriend and no skills to change her career path.

'W' rapes, tortures, beats and plays mind games with her body or is he giving her want she needs and teaching her to love the pain & pleasure and understand her worth. After the two hour sessions 'W' kisses her deeply and leaves her with words of poetry that just add to her confused state of mind.

'W' is a sadist through and through and chere provides the holes to fill his every dark, twisted, painful desires.

This book is BDSM at it's darkest and I loved every second of this book.

Chere finally gets her act together and boom I need part 2 roll on November !!!

You can't go wrong with Westside

Louie obviously knows his stuff and it's probably best you listen. Got a lot of cool knowledge bombs from this guy. Beware though, if you're a raw lifter, a lot of this stuff is going to sound crazy and you won't be able to do it due to the accessibility of bands and chains and whatnot.

Summary: An academic look at how film adaptations of Austen's novels inspire us to look anew at the novels.

Thoughts: If I was more organized, I would have published this last week with the Bedside Companion Book but I'm not so here it is. While I love Austen's novels, I'm also really interested in the films, hence my decision to pick up this book.

It was my fault for picking this up because it's a very scholarly look at Austen; this means many big words. many theories, and many examinations of other scholarly works. I was expecting a more fun look at the movies that have been adapted from Austen's novels. I shouldn't have because it looks like a skinny academic tract rather than a fun jaunt. He looks at three movies inspired by Austen: Metropolitan, Jane Austen in Manhattan, and Clueless. He looks at the relationship between Austen and Shakespeare. He looks briefly at some 90s adaptations of her films; as you can see it was published before that great spate of Austen films in 2005-7. I'm really not the best person to read this and I found it too boring.

Overall: For the Austen scholar rather than the more casual fan like me.

About the Author

Dr Luci Etheridge is a Consultant Paediatrician and Senior Fellow in Clinical Leadership at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust in East London. She previously worked for four years with UCL Medical School and was involved with the development of Fitness to Practise assessments for the General Medical Council and item writing for the Professional and Linguistics Assessment Board Part 1 and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. She is currently completing a doctorate in education at the Institute of Education, University of London.


Dr Alex Bonner is a Senior Anaesthetic Trainee in the North West Deanery. He is regularly involved in the teaching of medical students, foundation doctors and anaesthetic trainees preparing for their FRCA examinations. He is an instructor of Adult and Paediatric Advanced Life Support Courses and has experience of practising anaesthesia and teaching in Sub-Saharan Africa. He also has contributed to the development of Fitness to Practise assessments for the General Medical Council.


Dr Katharine Boursicot is a Reader in Medical Education and Deputy Head of the Centre for Medical and Healthcare Education at St George's, University of London. Previously she was Head of Assessment at Barts and The London, and Associate Dean for Assessment at Cambridge University School of Clinical Medicine. She is consultant on assessment to several UK medical schools, Royal Medical Colleges and international institutions as well as the General Medical Council PLAB Part 2 Panel and Fitness to Practise clinical skills testing.


Dr David Sales is a general practitioner by training who has been involved in medical assessment for over 20 years, having previously been convenor of the MRCGP knowledge test. He has run item writing workshops for a number of undergraduate medical schools, medical royal colleges and internationally. For the General Medical Council currently he chairs the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board Part 1 panel and is their consultant on fitness to practise knowledge testing.

Good study tool

I found these questions helpful in studying for my final med exams. The questions covered the specialties i needed to learn. The topics i felt were a little different to what is covered in other texts so it was a good practice to break away from the standard questions.

Compared to other texts, the answers are not very detailed and hence i often had to look up other texts for more information rather than being all in the one book. I guess this was a compromise for the 'pocket' size, but personally I mostly used it at home and would have preferred more detail.

Worthwhile if you have covered the other 'main' MCQ texts and looking for something a little different

Somewhat utopian. A case for encouraging investment in India.

Overall view: The book is certainly a good read and it reflects changes in post-1991 Indian corporate culture. There is certainly a great amount to learn about contrasting business cultures between Indian and western businesses. What it does is try to paint a very encouraging view of how Indian businesses think and act; the reality isn't quite the same. Instead of presenting only the rosy ideas of executives, some cross-checking with the employees of the companies might have provided a more realistic picture of today's India Way. This book reminds me of Tom Friedman's "The World is Flat".

Critique: It places too much emphasis on the idea that Indian businesses place societal goals at par, if not ahead, of profit maximization. While this may be true on paper, the reality is not quite the same. Cut-throat competition among businesses doesn't necessarily encourage societal consciousness. Concentrating on only big businesses while ignoring the many non-public companies is certainly not the right sample for studying Indian business. I understand not all aspects can be captured in a book, but the focus of the book is somewhat skewed. It certainly sounds cool to say "We care about society more than profits", but that's not what is happening. If that were to be the case, why drive indigenous forest-dwelling tribes out of their land to mine iron ore? Aren't they a part of society? If anything, their society is only slight broader than the shareholder community but that's about it.

We need to hear from the other side (the company employees, small businesses and the people) to truly understand the India Way.

Compelling case for Indian management style

Reality suspended
By Curious as can be
This book veers away from reality into fantasyland and depicts a country that is not India. Indian business is run in a conglomerate fashion, where big name industrialists control majority of natural resources and have the political clout to twist the arm of the government to make policies that favor them. The workers at these conglomerates are treated as they are, because there is purpose - they create the wealth that the industrialists enjoy. So they throw a few bones at their workers, while they enjoy the meat! The workers at these companies are means to an end (the end being the billions that the industrialists are worth - check the Forbes richest if you don't believe me). The only objective of these billionaires is to loot the country and enrich themselves in the process. Contrary to what the authors suggest, they are in no way involved in nation building!

The authors, being foreign - though of Indian origin, are making their assessments from the perch on the ivory tower and have no idea of what the reality of the common man is. They seem to be mesmerized by the sheer wealth of our industrialists and shower them with enough compliments to make them blush! Of course, they interviewed all these men in person and any bad remark would preclude granting of any future interviews! And, I fell for the book like many others; the book does have lot of forwards written by the industrialists themselves! (Now that should constitute some sort of conflict of interest)

The reality is summed up in this paragraph: The workers in these firms are like any other; they treat their employees well and make sure that they get the maximum work of them. They are not granted any stock options or ownership stake in companies (which would of course dilute the promoter's stake!), they are given living quarters (like the communists used to!), told exactly what to do (and not think too much). They are treated like babies who can never get away from their doting parents - never to be independent or self-sufficient again! They are the sole cause of why some of the best brains in India are not entrepreneurial and instead work for these conglomerates - that promises to take care of them from the time their graduation to their grave!

Not What I Expected

The author dispells many common myths, or puts them in their proper perspective. More than anything he cautions against a range of temptations that might appeal to the novice. He provides many useful practical tips for induction, explaining the simplicity of the natural process.

short and enjoyable

For me it was a quick but good review of information I've already learned in formal training. Someone that hasn't taken classes would likely benefit from the ideas presented. The ideas are expressed simply and clearly. I was glad to see the author caution readers that there are dangers in leading the client or in giving suggestions. The book is short, to the point and ultimately directs the reader to his other products.

Besides a couple of ideas about spiritualism included in this book, which I don't share with the author, this is a very practical and serious guide. Straight to the point, with a final recap and some good, sensible suggestions. Worth reading.
